ROTTERDAM -- Employees at Rotterdam Square Mall say their power is about to be turned off.

According to some of the stores' employees, National Grid crews are going store to store warning them that the power is about to be cut for nonpayment. A representative at the Kohan Retail Investment Group says they are working on the issue and hope to have it resolved soon.

National Grid issued the following statement about the issue: National Grid has been working with the owners of the Rotterdam Mall for several months to set up a payment plan that would benefit both the mall and National Grid. Despite our attempts to work with the customer they have been unable to reduce their balance owed for the energy they have used. We will continue to work with the customer to reduce their balance and return power to the facility.

CBS6 has been told that most of the smaller stores in the mall have utilities included in their rent. However, the larger stores may cover their own utilities and may stay open even if the rest of the mall closes.

Only stores with their own power meters will remain open, K-Mart, Sears, and a few more. The doors to the main mall will be closed and only side doors will be open for the few stores that remain open. Just left the mall as the power was being turned off.

We were talking to folks we know who lives in MO.
They said that their inside malls are dying and their cities are revamping their downtown section with retail and/or building shopping areas like Mohawk Commons.

well....the inside malls killed downtowns and now the malls are dying off.

how many times can we keep reinventing the wheel?

I wonder how long the fire alarm notification system can survive without power?  Interesting how you could keep the other stores open and potentially risk the life safety of those people if a life safety event occurred in the mall without power.

Plenty more...we've been doing the distributed/non-distributed computing shuffle in IT for 40+ years...

The well designed malls will survive and thrive, the others won't

Arctic Mall...Now it's a destination mall.  How many malls have you been to that are below freezing?  This should be great for its reputation as a sub freezing no lights shopping experience.  Very unique...

Remember it was in the news that the owner of the mall felt once the casino opened it would help with the Malls survival.   They may not make it that far.
