Lyme disease should be the 1st hint why we shouldn't mess with insects anymore, Plum Island anyone?

Really?  Can you provide link to support this.

Really?  Can you provide link to support the safety of the genetic modifications, and prove that it will never affect humans or alter the food chain?

The only thing that is altered is the ability to reproduce, that's it. There is no interaction because male mosquitoes don't bite.

Right, and the birds and fish that eat the mosquitoes won't be affected in the least.

I thought that Florida was a red state.

If this is allowed they will eventually attempt to modify human DNA to be immune from mosquitoes carrying diseases.

Where did I say that you did say it was safe?

Read my words.

You challenged him for proof that it was unsafe.

I challenged you for proof that it was safe, based on your challenge of it being unsafe.

So, you apparently feel that only you can challenge statements.

Never ask him for proof.  WAAAAY out of bounds.  It's a one way conversation.  It was going good for him until you put HIM on the spot and ask for proof.  Do not challenge him...you will be accused of "playing games".

Question: What Good Are Mosquitoes?

Answer:

There isn't much love lost between people and mosquitoes. At the very least, these bloodthirsty insects are major annoyances, biting us with a persistence that can be maddening. If insects can be credited with evil intent, mosquitoes seem determined to wipe the human race out. As carriers of deadly diseases, mosquitoes are the deadliest insect on Earth. Each year, millions of people die from malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever after being bitten by a disease-carrying mosquito. Mosquitoes also carry diseases that pose serious threats to livestock and pets

With all these strikes against them, it's hard to imagine that mosquitoes fulfill any useful purpose. We forget that mosquitoes populated this planet long before man; the oldest mosquito fossils date back some 200 million years, to the Cretaceous period. Clearly, mosquitoes fill an important ecological niche. So what good are mosquitoes?

Mosquito larvae are aquatic insects, and as such, play an important role in the aquatic food chain. According to Dr. Gilbert Waldbauer in The Handy Bug Answer Book, "mosquito larvae are filter feeders that strain tiny organic particles such as unicellular algae from the water and convert them to the tissues of their own bodies, which are, in turn, eaten by fish." Mosquito larvae are, in essence, nutrient-packed snacks for fish and other aquatic animals.

Their role on the bottom of the food chain doesn't end at the larval stage, of course. As adults, mosquitoes serve as equally nutritious meals for birds, bats, and spiders.

As much as we loathe them, mosquitoes represent a considerable biomass of food for wildlife on the lower rungs of the food chain. Their extinction, were it even achievable, would have an enormous adverse affect on the entire ecosystem.

keeping the mosquitos from procreating will lessen the cost on the healthcare system toward what posterity

Yippee, technological advances never come back to haunt us.

DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) is a colorless, crystalline, tasteless and almost odorless organochloride known for its insecticidal properties. DDT has been formulated in almost every conceivable form, including solutions in xylene or petroleum distillates, emulsifiable concentrates, water-wettable powders, granules, aerosols, smoke candles and charges for vaporizers and lotions.

First synthesized in 1874, DDT's insecticidal action was discovered by the Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller in 1939. It was then used in the second half of World War II to control malaria and typhus among civilians and troops. After the war, DDT was made available for use as an agricultural insecticide and its production and use duly increased.[3] Müller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods" in 1948.

In 1962, the book Silent Spring by American biologist Rachel Carson was published. It catalogued the environmental impacts of indiscriminate DDT spraying in the United States and questioned the logic of releasing large amounts of chemicals into the environment without a sufficient understanding of their effects on ecology or human health. The book claimed that DDT and other pesticides had been shown to cause cancer and that their agricultural use was a threat to wildlife, particularly birds. Its publication was a seminal event for the environmental movement and resulted in a large public outcry that eventually led, in 1972, to a ban on the agricultural use of DDT in the United States.

-------------------------------------------------------

Then we have the electrical generation industry which was a godsend.

Until our fish became inedible from the PCB waste from the electrical industry.

--------------------------------------------------------

Just as nuclear power was ushered in under the banner of being so cheap we would never need to meter the power.

Then came the massive deadly nuclear waste issue.

Plus the rising temperatures of the rivers from cooling the nuclear reactors.

And don't forget the background heat generated by the nuclear industry that has added immensely to global warming.

Add that heat to the energy released from nuclear testing, and you will have the equivalent of one Hiroshima explosion every 3.5 square miles in the north American continent.

But nobody noticed because it is compartmentalized and incrementally put into place.

When it's a hot day in France, they have to shut down reactors because the rivers get too hot to sustain fish life.

But hey, we know this is not a cash driven action, but a humanitarian action.(tic)

Coal generating plants have killed all life in over 30% of all lakes in NY state.

When the inedible fish eat the sterile mosquitoes, I'm sure it will impact no humans or the food chain.

Because us humans live outside the laws of nature.

Was Zika outbreak caused by release of genetically modified mosquitoes in Brazil?

The genetically engineered insects were designed to stop the spread of dengue fever but critics now fear the programme may have had a deadly consequence

Getty Dr. Angela Rocha examines Ludmilla Hadassa Dias de Vasconcelos

Was the Zika outbreak caused by genetically-modified mosquitoes?

The Zika virus outbreak currently gripping the Americas could have been sparked by the release of genetically modified mosquitoes in 2012, critics say.

The insects were engineered by biotechnology experts to combat the spread of dengue fever and other diseases and released into the general population of Brazil in 2012.

But with the World Health Organisation(WHO) now meeting in Geneva to desperately discuss cures for the Zika virus, speculation has mounted as to the cause of this sudden outbreak.

The Zika virus was first discovered in the 1950s but the recent outbreak has escalated alarmingly, causing birth defects and a range of health problems in South and central America.

The first cases were reported in Brazil last May with up to 1.5 million now thought people affected by the virus which is spread by mosquitoes endemic to Latin America.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito sub-species that carries both the Zika virus and dengue was the type targeted with genetically modified mosquitoes.

The aim was to release only male Aedes mosquitoes into the wild and they would in turn produce offspring with their virus carrying female counterparts.

This offspring would then die off before breeding age due to the GM coding in their genes.

But experts expressed concerns about the programme at the time of its inception, arguing that further studies were needed on the potential consequences.

On Saturday, senior health experts shockingly announced that the outbreak could pose a bigger threat to global health than the Ebola epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people in Africa.

Outbreak: Experts have warned the Zika virus poses a greater threat to world health than Ebola

"In many ways the Zika outbreak is worse than the Ebola epidemic of 2014-15," Jeremy Farrar, head of the Wellcome trust told The Guardian.

"Most virus carriers are symptomless.

"It is a silent infection in a group of highly vulnerable individuals – pregnant women – that is associated with a horrible outcome for their babies.”

The UK is unlikely to be affected by the outbreak because the virus carrying mosquitoes could not survive the climate.

But women returning from affected areas are warned to postpone trying for a baby for at least a month in case they have been infected
