Arrested before the weekend
Arrested after the State of the State
Arrested before lunch

Interesting set of coincidences....

Guy holds a lot of dirt on too many people. Remember failed coup of years ago by Bragman!

Technically or legally, he doesn't have to step down as Speaker or as a member of the Assembly until/unless he is convicted.  He has survived efforts to oust him in the past.  But this time, I think that it would be more difficult for him to survive.  Hopefully, he will do the right thing and at least step aside as Speaker.

Maybe it will catch on and they will arrest more than half of the government.

..and replace them with people who want to attain government power so they can get paid and collect a pension so they can control where the plundered money goes and force people to live by their rules.

I always get a kick out of government calls for "ethics reform" as if the system of government is ethical.  Telling people they can't have more than 7 bullets in a gun is ethical?

Shelly has a quaint habit of traveling from NYC to Albany by way of Washington D.C. First class, by air, so he can rack up more frequent flier miles for his personal use. His four adult children still vote from his home address, where they haven't lived for decades. His top aide rapist is out and is back working for the Democrats. The man is filthier than is even believable. The vote thing may seem paltry, but it just goes to show he can openly flout the rules and get away with it. Remember when Jim Tedisco ran against that Scott Murphy? He lost by what, six or so votes? The ability to control a handful of illegitimate votes is no small thing.
If Mr. Bharara can make any headway at all against this demon from hell, it will take ages for anyone to step into those shoes.

Tedisco last by 399 votes.

Jim had a tough row to hoe because he didn't have the full backing of the GOP in Warren County and Washington County.  Scott Murphy's wife, Jennifer, is from a huge extended family with ties to both those counties and many of them are involved in GOP up there.  Tedisco had to get past State Senator Betty Little to win the GOP nomination.  Betty Little has a huge base of support in Warren County who - after Mrs. Little lost the nomination - were more likely to support Scott Murphy.   (There is a connection between the Little family and Scott Murphy's wife's family.)

Democrats defend Silver because they profit from his corrupt system

By Bob McManusJanuary 25, 2015 | 6:00am

The ink was scarcely dry on the federal fingerprint pad last week when the usual suspects began lining up behind the biggest fish US Attorney Preet Bharara has hauled in to date: New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.
“I’ve always known Shelly Silver to be a man of integrity,” announced Mayor de Blasio, without an atom of irony.
“There is no one in public life in New York who has fought more effectively, for decades, for almost everything I care about in public policy than Sheldon Silver,” Richard Gottfried of Manhattan, one of the Assembly’s longest-tenured members proclaimed with a straight face.
“I want to see the facts before I have an opinion,” said Gov. Cuomo — ominously for him, also an object of curiosity to the feds.
So there you have it.
Bharara convincingly accuses the most powerful person in New York government over the past 20 years of taking $4 million in exchange for no work whatsoever — in effect, selling his office, if not his soul — and the insiders are afraid to say boo.
Could anything be more typical of the attitude New York’s morally bankrupt political establishment brings to such matters? For all the players — overt crooks and fellow travellers alike — the relevant query last week seemed to be this:
Why is everybody picking on poor Shelly Silver all of a sudden?
Sad to say, that’s a rational question.

For it may have taken a five-count federal corruption indictment alleging millions in kickbacks and other corrupt practices for everyday New Yorkers to twig to the fact that the Lower East Side’s favorite son is — in the fullest Nixonian sense of the word — a crook.
But insiders have known better for many, many years.
Shelly Silver is the man with a thumb in every cup of soup; he’s a superbly talented manipulator who can, and does, make things happen on all levels of government to the benefit of his friends, his allies and — Bharara now alleges — himself, too.
By virtue of his status as top Democrat in the Albany Legislature, Silver:

Controls appointments to the state Board of Regents, which sets policy for New York’s multibillion-dollar education establishment; not for nothing did Silver put a lifelong friend, Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, in charge of the whole enterprise. And not for nothing do the teachers unions — and their lavishly funded political action committees — love Shelly Silver.
Put Jonathan Lippman, another boyhood buddy and a fellow trial lawyer, in command of New York’s courts — from the lofty Court of Appeals down to the lowest justice of the peace. So no wonder New York is one of the most aggressive anti-tort-reform jurisdictions in America; no wonder that Silver’s association with one of the state’s most prominent trial-law firms, Weitz & Luxenberg, is integral to the indictments handed up against him on Wednesday.

And the above merely are side dishes.

Tomorrow morning when he comes to Albany, Mr. Silver should do the right thing and resign as Speaker of the Assembly.

A-jello supports him.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

That is what he had planned to do.  Some in the Democratic conference don't seem to be going along with that plan.  I still think that he should MUST resign as Speaker.

The problem for Preet Bharara is that after the days of wild corruption in NYS, Tammany Hall corruption, they had to come up with new, legal ways to practice the same kind of self-dealing. Since Sheldon Silver is a lawyer and someone who makes laws, it isn't that hard for him to do, as long as he can persuade others to go along. That's what is wrong with our "three men in a room" style of government, it gives the three too much power and too much cover.
Some who support Silver honestly care about certain causes Sheldon supports, or appears to support, such as education. I suspect Bill de Blasio falls into that category. Others who support Sheldon have to, because if he is found guilty, and they have done exactly the same, on a much smaller scale, or enabled his corruption, they are guilty as well.
L4L, your comment about arresting half the government sounds like a joke, but unfortunately it is probably close to the truth.
