Since we homeowners will pay the county property taxes on it, and since city homeowners will pay the city taxes, the county taxes, and the school taxes on this property, anyone know if we will get the financial statements that we have a birthright entitlement to?  After all, it's OUR money!

Yeah, just like we get financials on Proctors, the Bow Tie, the gin mills, etc.   Absolutely no transparency whatsoever under the current city/co/plex leaders.   Even no transparency regarding foreclosures and the city violated state law by not publishing the list of foreclosures.

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

As others here have already stated. It is what it is, either deal with it or move out.

The Schenectady project, like all the proposals, promises new jobs and added tax revenue to the community.

According to the location board, the project is expected to generate $8.2 million in tax revenue for Schenectady County and the city, as well as $65.7 million in statewide school aid or property tax relief.

The developers estimate that the project will generate 877 full-time jobs and 193 part-time positions. Like the other applicants, the developers have agreed to employ unionized workers.

Probably what I intend to do...The timing should be perfect, the Casino won't be open for few years yet, it should either stabilize or increase housing prices... by the the time the shine is off the penny and they start falling again, I'll be a former county resident...

I always was going to make this move, Casino or not... Saratoga County just fits my lifestyle better and I've already got the land.

VERY INTERESTING and maybe others can learn (or not)....

That said, we members of Stop the Schenectady Casino and our allies in opposition to the casino hope to work in good faith with government and community leaders, along with the casino operator, to gain the most benefits for the community from Rivers Casino at Mohawk Harbor while producing a minimum of negative effects.  If the casino is indeed a reality, we need to turn our efforts from a short-term “fight” to try to stop a casino from being located in Schenectady into a longterm “mission” to make Schenectady the first city to avoid the social harm that comes with any urban casino.  That is a goal that both casino proponents and opponents can surely agree upon and unite their talents and resources to meet. The good news is that we have a couple of years to think through the issues and work on solutions (and perhaps the funding many of them will need).

please provide source of your assessment on taxes. What I find is the following information:

MC1's claim is simply this...and is absolutely true:

The Casino land is a tax exempt brown field
They will pay NO county or city property taxes
They will pay no school taxes

They will pay county sales tax, which is the number you quoted
They will pay the state 48% of their profit, which is the 65.7 million for STATE WIDE school tax relief (your quote) the key term here is statewide...not just Schenectady county...

This is a biggest win for the City-County of Schenectady to top off numerous big wins.  It won't be the last big win either.   There is still time in 2014 for a few announcements but there will definitely be additional good news  throughout 2015.

Good luck with that...Florida is a pretty good deal...I just can't take the summer heat and I love being outside, so I'll probably do the snowbird thing and rent from Jan-Apr..
If buying, You can get a nice place in one of the those FLA senior communities for well under 50K...what else do you need?

So just to be sure I understand, the exemptions, etc., are those that already exist on the
Galesi property and do not apply to or have any bearing on the Casino project, which
will pay taxes, etc.  Do I have it right?

The Casino will pay sales taxes to the county and 48% of its profit to the state.
I do not know if Galesi is selling the property, leasing it to the Casino owners, or what.
Regardless, that property will remain off the tax rolls when it pertains to school and property tax.

it's great until it becomes a cancerous tumor on the county that is feed by the blood of the county.....time will tell.....

gamble on THAT.......

there's medical insurance with treatment for cancer(which isn't invited in)...

.the ONLY insurance for a casino here is the taxpayer.......
increase fire safety
increase policing
increase snow/road crew
increase in water use
increase in sewer use
increase in jail size
etc etc........

this is funny math.....like gambling,,,

Millionaires will undoubtedly make money.

I would like to see just one case where property taxes went down because a casino was built.

I dont think casinos bring either good orbad.   The people intrinsicly are  either able to mange  their  cravings or not. It doesnt really matter if the liquor store is around the corner or down the street.

The casino in Elgin Illanois sits where the Elgin Watch factory used to be.

The Hollywood Casino in Toledo Ohio sits on a site of a former glass manufacturer that invented float glass

the Hollywood casino in Columbus Ohio is built on the old Delphi Automotive parts plant

the Motor city Casino in downtown Detorit- the original Wonder bread factory
Chances are things are still crappy around every one of these casinos. They are all built in crappy areas.
Some can  and will profit.  There is oportunity  .

Many will use the casino as a stepping stone to leave town. Maybe some will join the hospitality industry- find work on cruise lines. Move to Missippi .

Depending on the state most casinos pay about 20 to 50 million dollars a year in tax. The city where the casino is has to fight for its share of the money.  Schenectady will get  money.
