What is it that's so happy? Nothing. I just hope that the veterans are having a nice day. Those of us whose fathers were World War Two veterans tend to see it as a day honoring that generation in particular. I had my flag flying. I'm happy that the day was removed from the Monday holiday commercialism and put back where it means something. |

All the nations that participated in WWII have fathers that fought and died in it. All believing they were fighting against evil enemies. Families right here in the US have relatives that died fighting for the confederate states in the War Between the States. God help an American flying a confederate flag honoring their relative that died in that war. Veterans Day - a celebration of tribalism. |

I know some sons of Germans who tell me their Dads weren't too thrilled fighting for the Reich. I wouldn't say all of them believed they were fighting evil. My father WAS fighting evil, and I'm proud of what he did. |

You father(indirectly) participated in a war where his commanders dropped two atomic bombs on civilian populations killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people. We would need fifty 9/11's to even begin to understand that type of evil and senseless slaughter. |

I'm proud of my father's service. Give it a rest, Cicero. He stopped the Nazis, the Nazis needed to be stopped. If he hadn't, it wouldn't have made ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL to what happened in Japan. |

The only issue I have with celebrating military service is that it makes kids think it is a good thing to use guns and the use of force to solve all your problems. Sure, there have been actual circumstances where military action was necessary, but most recent actions are questionable and aren't even actual wars. Then the soldiers come home and commit suicide by the thousands each year. There is a TV show on veteran suicide on right now. I would rather see kids being warned about the often questionable use of force and the dangers of suicide after leaving the service, before they are allowed to enlist. Because of the high risk of suicide, I have been trying to make an effort to not bash veterans, especially during the holidays. |

The day was to commemorate the end of war, we just kept having wars. I don't celebrate military service. I just like to honor those who made an extraordinary sacrifice. I wish to God we would quit thinking of reasons to have wars. |

Quoted Text
In the U.S., the function of Veterans Day is subtly different from that of other 11 November holidays. Instead of specifically honoring war dead, Veterans Day honors all American veterans living and dead. The official national remembrance of those killed in action is Memorial Day, originally called 'Decoration Day', from the practice of decorating the graves of soldiers, which originated in the years immediately following the American Civil War.
