If you’re against taxes, don’t travel or move to any other developed nations, their taxes are much higher.
90. Do not use any resource that was discovered by the USGS.
91. Do not ask for energy assistance from the government.

95. If you hate taxes, do not complain when millions more illegal immigrants cross the border because there are no more border patrol agents.

Rare bridges to the past There are just 16 privately owned toll bridges left in the nation. N.J. and Pa. have three of them.

Not all bridge tolls are created equal.

As most motorists surely know, the dollars and cents they pay in tolls usually end up in the coffers of the states or a state agency, such as the Delaware River Port Authority.

But federal highway statistics show that scattered around the country are 16 bridges with private owners who are empowered to collect tolls. Three are in New Jersey, and two of them are at the Shore.

For decades, the Beesleys Point Bridge across Great Egg Harbor Bay and the Margate Bridge have carried countless vacationers and an ever-increasing number of year-round residents on their trips to and around the Shore.

They are still active pieces of the early road network that opened the South Jersey coast to the motoring public, eventually supplanting the railroads that created the resorts. And along with the Dingmans Ferry Bridge on the upper Delaware River, they are reminders of an even earlier era when private tollhouses dotted the state.

Built in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the two Shore bridges share similarities - both are only two lanes and are made of steel, concrete and wood - but their differences are pronounced enough that one now makes money and the other doesn't.

The Margate Bridge - a two-mile combination of three small fixed spans, a drawbridge, and a causeway - is the moneymaker, although its history has been shaped by money troubles.

The Hansen and Capaldi families have owned it since 1964, when they and a family no longer in the picture bought the seashore-mainland connector at a bankruptcy auction.

The bridge wasn't bankrupt, but its owner - the Hill Dredging Co. - was, so the bridge was sold off to cover the firm's debts.

Even earlier, when the bridge opened in 1932 as part of a plan to develop Margate, it carried cars for only a couple of months before it closed - or, rather, its drawbridge was kept open - for seven years.

"I guess there weren't enough cars to pay for the bridge," said Roger Hansen, chairman of Ole Hansen & Sons Inc., the bridge's parent company.
