Argumentum Ad Hominem is a legitimate(though fallacious) rhetorical tool. Attacking the reputation of your debate opponent is fair game. We see it every election cycle. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent running these types of ads. George Bush used cocaine, George Bush was an alcoholic, Swift Boating of John Kerry, Obama's birth certificate, Obama's a Muslim, Bill Clinton smoked weed, John Edwards cheated on his dying wife, Mitt Romney is a rich Mormon. It goes on and on and on....
There does come a point where the audience may begin to feel sympathy for the person getting attacked and the ad hominem attacks begin hurting the reputation of the attacker.
You forgot that Al Gore was a fat, southern, good ole boy who's daddy was a KKK member and voted against every civil rights bill that came before Congress, and that Al Gore's family made its multi-millions (which he inherited a huge portion of without ever having to break a sweat a day in his life) in petroleum and other climate-killing energy sources and that Al Gore was either too stupid or too corrupt to know better than to take a few hundred thousand dollars in donations from a bunch of penniless foreign monks (read -- major felony for taking campaign donations from foreigners).
Gore, with Obama and Carter on his heels tied for second place, was the worst Democrat ever nominated for the presidency.
