"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,"
a guy we know who lives in Schoharie is getting ready to do the same thing. he and his wife are going to build a 'tiny' home. kinda neat the way he describes it. i'm to claustrophobic!!
When the INSANE are running the ASYLUM In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule. -- Friedrich Nietzsche
“How fortunate for those in power that people never think.” Adolph Hitler
Tiny houses are - supposedly - the new trend. Personally, I would prefer something about 1,200 square feet.

The last home I owned was 1800 sq ft or so. My apartment is around 750 sq. ft. It's still way too big for me. I could live quite comfortably in less than half that. I once considered living out of a pop-up camper, but it wouldn't work around here year-round, so I set that idea aside. I actually like living in this area, but if I ever decide to move, I know where that pop-up is.

Somewhere in my files, I have a plan for a small Greek Revival cottage - the original was built in Louisiana - post Katrina, That was a 1 bedroom - 1 bath - just about 1,000 square feet. It did have a nice long porch which is something that I would like for sitting in my white linen suit while smoking cigars, sipping some bourbon and talking with friends and family.

Yeah, again 1000 sq ft is way more than I would ever need. I could probably get by with 250-300 sq ft tops. Remember too these place also have lofts. I'm not sure if that's included in the total sq footage or not.
The room I'm sitting in now is 130 sq ft. In it there's a bed, a desk and chair with this computer, a small bookcase, a china closet used for storage, 2 file cabinets bridged with plywood for a second computer work area, a small table and a small entertainment center on wheels (actually an old tv stand.) This room seems enormous to me. That's why 300 sq ft, for me at least, is adequate.

If you feel that 300 square feet is enough and you choose to live in that space -- I certainly wouldn't try to dissuade you from doing it. I am just saying that I prefer having a bit more space -- and no lofts.
