If you've ever vacationed on St Maarten, chances are that your plane landed at Princess
Juliana International Airport.  The runway starts just across a road from the beach, and the
other end of the runway ends in a mountain.
Needless to say, pilots need all the runway to land larger aircraft.

We had a cruise stop in St Maarten last November...even though the airport is on the other side of the Island, we paid the cash for a cab ride over.
There is a bar there that has the incoming flight schedules so you know when to look for them. The most impressive is when the Air France jets come in...I swear you can see the passengers in the plane looking out their windows!

We landed at this airport in the 90's.  It was like a roller coaster ride.  I don't remember
ever using so much BRAKE on a landing.

Saba, and St Barts are other similar short runway airstrips in the Carrib.

SABA is basically an extinct volcano.  Their roads are horrendous, full of switchbacks.
Cars there all have very low rear end gears to be able to climb those hills.

Saba does have some of the best scuba diving in the world!
