Yesterday was the 81st Birthday of the living music legend and a truly American Treasure - Willy Nelson. His musical talents, accomplishments and contributions cross over so many genres and decades. For me - he will always be one of The Highwaymen with Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. I hope that he is "On the Road, Again" and enjoying nothing but "Blue Skies" for many, many years ahead.

"In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot."
Of course, one of my favorite Willy Nelson songs is the one about my place of all:
No Place But Texas"
God painted the bluebonnets in the fields By a tough little scrub oak on an East Texas hill And he plucked the star from a lone star sky And he put it in the twinkle of a cowboy's eye
The wide open spaces he made wild and free Texas as far as any eye can see And he made her sons grow tough and strong They still cry when they hear a sad song
[Chorus:] No place but Texas Would I ever roam No place but Texas My home, sweet home No place but Texas My home, sweet home
When I die I hope they bury me By the Pedernales River 'neath a white oak tree Where I can see the longhorns graze And the cactus flowers blooming in the morning haze
[Repeat chorus]

Saw a post on Facebook that said "If weed is a gateway Drug it better hurry, Happy B-day Willie!!!"
Also gotta send love for my favorite Willie joke "do you know how much condoms cost back in the day? -person asks how much "I don't know, we never used them"
One of my absolute favorite songs, City of New Orleans, written by one of my favorite songwriters, Steve Goodman, was covered by Willy Nelson. It is without a doubt the best cover of the song -- Goodman's original version, of course, is the only one better. Goodman died way too young and we've lost so many of the truly talented singer/songwriters over the years. Sadly, the great age of music in America (country and the other forms worth listening to) is nearly dead or dead.
Ridin' on the City of New Orleans Illinois Central Monday morning rail Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail All along the southbound odyssey the train pulls out of Kankakee And rolls along past houses farms and fields Passing trains that have no name and graveyards full of old black men And graveyards full of rusted automobiles Good morning America how are you? Say, don't you know me I'm your native son I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans And I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done
Dealin' cards with an old man in the club car Penny a point, ain't no one keepin' score Pass that paper bag that holds the bottle And feel the wheels a rumbling neath the floor And the sons of poor men porters and the sons of engineers Ride their father's magic carpet made of steel Mothers with their babes asleep rockin' to that gentle beat And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel Good morning America... [guitar] Night time on the City of New Orleans changing cars in Memphis Tennessee Half way home we'll be there by morning Through the Mississippi darkness rolling down to the sea And all the towns and people seem to fade into a bad dream And the steel rails still ain't heard the news The conductor sings his songs again the passengers will please refrain This train has got the disappearing railroad blues Good morning America...

This 1966 hit reminds us that Willy Nelson began his musical career performing in a Polka Band in Texas -- that great state where many of the earliest non-Hispanic European settlers were from Central Europe -- Germans and Poles. They influenced Texas music and, of course, that great American tradition - Texas Barbecue. Texas Barbecue - the barbecue worth eating - was created by German and Polish settlers bringing together brisket and kielbasa. (needless to say the BEST cuisines of Europe married to form the BEST cuisine in America.) The rest is history.
"Fraulein"
Far across deep blue water lives an old German's daughter By the banks of the old River Rhine Where I loved her and left her now I can't forget her I miss my pretty Fraulein Fraulein Fraulein walk down by the river pretend that your hand's holding mine By the same stars above you I swear that I love you you are my pretty Fraulein [steel - fiddle] When my memories wander away over yonder to the sweetheart that I left behind In a moment of glory a face comes before me the face of my pretty Fraulein Fraulein Fraulein look up toward the heavens Each night when the stars start to shine By the same stars above you I swear that I love you you are my pretty Fraulein

everyone has made donations to charities or just their neighbors, they just aren't in the lime light....
They haven't raised $29 million, which is the total Willie Nelson raised for just Farm Aid one of many charities he backs, in 20 years.

(Written by Irving Berlin but covered by a number of artists. Willie Nelson's is the best IMHO.)
Blue skies Smiling at me Nothing but blue skies Do I see
Bluebirds Singing a song Nothing but bluebirds All day long
Never saw the sun shining so bright Never saw things going so right Noticing the days hurrying by When you're in love, my how they fly
Blue days All of them gone Nothing but blue skies From now on
