We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.   Funny how that works.

That is how I grew up. And that is how my children grew up too. That was a very long time ago.

The world was a safer place back then, our kids grew up the same way. Sad that kids today can't enjoy the freedom we had.

Safer ? Perspective is a funny thing - it seemed like it was a much simpler-er life.

Back in the day when automobile dashboards left dent in your forehead. back when you could not only smoke in a supermarket but put it out on the floor.

Back when you could hit your wife because she wouldn't shut up .

Back when asbestos was popular

Back when Whitey  was a legitimate nickname

we just built a different cage

humans aren't any less safe than prior generations

having 'stupid tags' on hair driers doesn't make the human any safer, it just sets a precedent that there is a wizard of oz behind
the curtain that will tell you what to do, so don't bother thinking we do that for you. that's a clockwork orange.

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

I believe that ea h person builds their own cage or box to live in.  How big is your cage ?  In the 50s and 60 s  many people were afraid of radiation.  Back yard bomb shelters ( cages  ) were popular.  And everyone was afraid of polio.

Yes safer, fewer cars on the road, neighbors watched out for each others kids, and  fewer perverts walked the streets.

In the good old days neighbors heard  screen doors slamming and saw mommie get smacked by daddy every once in a while. It was even ok for grandpa to give grandma a wack now and then. Black and blue marks were ok as long as they went away in a week or so.

I agree with Sombody's posts.
Also,
"I was drunk" was an excuse for killing someone with a car.
If you've seen "Mad Men", it portrays typical opportunity for women in business.
Racism was a way of life in most of America.

I'm not sure which item you are referring to Shadow, but are you saying that there was
no racism in the 50's 60's and 70's?
That Drunk Driving wasn't more acceptable in those years?
Or that Women had equal opportunity in business???

Most of the racism was in the southern states and not prevalent in the area I grew up in. There were drunk drivers but clearly not as many as there are today. You also have to remember that the bars closed earlier then and there were a lot more neighborhood bars so many people just walked instead of drove. You can also add in driving under the influence of drugs today which was not a problem back then. Most women were stay at home Moms then as the extra money wasn't needed in order to pay the bills.

Quoted Text
In the mid 1970s, alcohol was a factor in over 60% of traffic fatalities.
Traffic crashes were the leading cause of alcohol-related deaths and two-thirds of traffic
deaths among persons aged 16 to 20 involved alcohol.

Since the early 1980s, alcohol-related traffic deaths per population have been cut in half.
Today alcohol is involved in 37% of all traffic deaths among persons aged 16 to 20.

That was the same for me too. We lived in a very diversified community. And we all were supportive of one another. We had dinner and picnics together. All of the kids played together.  Moms were home too. And if we got in trouble at school, we were more afraid of our parents finding out. But I never got in trouble.
