'Poop cruise' witness: 'I got mentally injured'
By Scott Bronstein, CNN

updated 10:26 AM EST, Tue February 25, 2014

A federal judge has ruled Carnival liable and responsible for the engine fire that left the ill-fated Triumph cruise adrift in the Gulf of Mexico in February 2013. More than 4,200 passengers endured power outages, overflowing toilets and food shortages. Click through the gallery to see some other unfortunate events that have affected recent cruises.

But Graham also ruled that the company did not breach its contract with passengers, agreeing with Carnival's argument that when passengers bought a ticket, they were never promised a safe voyage at all, which may come as a big surprise to future cruise passengers.

"The contract ticket makes no express guarantee for safe passage, a seaworthy vessel, adequate and wholesome food, and sanitary and safe living conditions," wrote Graham. The ruling reflects the little protections afforded to passengers as currently written by many cruise ship companies.

It surprised me that it took so long to send help. They weren't in Antarctica or anything.

why all of the 'cruise' problems lately?

have there always been these issues or is the media just getting bored?

just like riding a roller coaster one is NOT guaranteed 100% safe ride.......

I think that maybe the really huge ships are the ones with the problems, and I think it is a relatively new thing to have those giant ships. Looking at some of them, I don't see how you could avoid getting sick in a gargantuan, floating tenement like that. Where is the fresh air and sunlight? I also think that in making these exotic trips affordable to the middle class, the competition is so fierce they have to cut corners somewhere. This is just my guesswork. I had been thinking about taking one of those cruises with my elderly parents, as a more comfortable way for them to travel a long distance, but after that floating toilet disaster that's out.
