Base $69,900
Performance $89,900
Affordability by an average individual is obviously not a factor in the decision process.

For a new product, it's doing well.  If sales start to climb, production costs will drop for
Tesla.  It's market is the Luxury car buyers so a $70,000 price tag could still make it
competitive.

Maybe they have overcome the battery fire issues to be rated this high.
84 MPG is great, but I honestly see the price going up as features are added.
As you say, "luxury" buyers...those prices don't traditionally go down.
Out of my price range and always will be.

Car of the Year?.....Who in the Obama admin threatened Consumer Reports ?

The only people that are buying these cars are 'limousine liberals' who want to show their "friends" how cool and 'green' they are.

Nobody drops $70G on a car because they are worried about gas prices and if you look at the specs on this thing, it's not impressive at all compared to others at this price range.

Or you could have this for around the same price

I agree, but that isn't the market the Tesla S is after.  It's competing with these cars:
Audi S6

BMW 7-Series

Lexus LS460

Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

LOL @ " 'limousine liberals".

According to Edmonds:
~ It's the technology that is selling the Tesla S ~
The conclusion: Compared to other luxury sedans, Tesla sells the Model S to a much higher
percentage of men and those buyers are, on average, younger and wealthier than those
purchasing competing models.

"Wealthy young men" (according to Buck) are "Liberals"!

OK.  I'll bite... Why did "THEY" crush the EV-1?
(They of course must be 'evil forces')

Really??? You do seem to jump to conclusions.  I posted the title of the thread, a pic of the
Tesla S, and the link to an article on the subject...
So how does that make me an expert???

The EV1 post is all yours Madam X.  Does that make you an expert on EV1's???

Tesla expects to sell 35,000 all-electric Model S sedans this year and is readying production of its
Model X SUV that will go on sale early next year.

It plans to begin selling a more affordable “Gen III” sedan by 2017 for about $35,000, or roughly half
the cost of the cheapest Model S, but the company says cutting the cost of battery packs is
necessary to make its cars more affordable.
