Fracking Causing Earthquakes

Quoted Text
In Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio and other states, people who have rarely experienced
earthquakes in the past are getting used to them as a fairly common phenomenon. This
dramatic uptick in tremors is related to drilling for oil and natural gas, several reports find
. And the growing popularity of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is in part to blame.

Between 1970 and 2000, there was an average of 20 earthquakes per year within the central
and eastern United States. Between 2010 and 2013, there was an average of more than
100 earthquakes annually. A United States Geological Survey released last month summarized
research on man-made earthquakes conducted by one of the agency’s geophysicists:

USGS scientists have found that at some locations the increase in seismicity coincides with
the injection of wastewater in deep disposal wells. Much of this wastewater is a byproduct
of oil and gas production and is routinely disposed of by injection into wells specifically designed
for this purpose.

So, the actual hydraulic fracturing process itself is not to blame in these cases; instead, it’s the
injection of wastewater into deep wells that accompanies it.

Hydraulic fracturing produces a higher volume of wastewater than traditional drilling — as the name
implies, drillers use millions of gallons of high-pressure water, sand and chemicals to break apart
rock and release gas trapped in pockets in the earth. The wastewater generated is often
contaminated with salt or poisonous chemicals, and environmental regulations bar drilling companies
from allowing it to mix with drinking water; oftentimes, the most economical way for these
companies to  dispose of it is to sequester it deep in the ground, below aquifers. Once there, it
changes pressure underground and lubricates fault lines, with the potential effect of causing
earthquakes.

In both Texas and Oklahoma, the number of earthquakes per year has increased ten-fold. And
wells storing wastewater from fracking have also been linked to hundreds of earthquakes near
Youngstown, Ohio.

God! Another one of these?

Sometimes I wish these boards were run like the CCP gaming forum.

In Boxy's world, the cities of Bismarck (north) and Sioux Falls (south) in the Dakotas should be completely flattened by now due to all the earthquakes caused by fracking.

Also, nobody can drink the water because it's all contaminated.

Is Buck really saying that the ground below Bismark or Sioux Falls is the same as is below NY
PA, TX OK or OH???

Yea, I didn't think so.

BTW, much of NY State is in a 'moderate' earthquake zone area.

Exxon CEO fighting water tower near his house out of fracking concerns

Quoted Text
As ExxonMobil’s CEO, it’s Rex Tillerson’s job to promote the hydraulic fracturing enabling
the recent oil and gas boom, and fight regulatory oversight.
The exception is when Tillerson’s $5 million property value might be harmed. Tillerson has joined a
lawsuit that cites fracking’s consequences in order to block the construction of a 160-foot water
tower next to his and his wife’s Texas home.

Just another example of the extremist left's disinformation/propaganda campaign.

Fracking has been done for decades -- SAFELY.   New York State should approve fracking immediately and open up access to energy independence and energy $$$ for New Yorkers.

How Oil and Gas Disposal Wells Can Cause Earthquakes

Quoted Text
The disposal of drilling wastewater used in fracking has now been scientifically linked
to earthquakes. The fluids used in fracking (and the wastewater that comes back up the well)
is disposed of by injecting it into disposal wells deep underground. This is generally regarded as
the safest, most cost-efficient way to get rid of it. But in some parts of the country, especially
in the Barnett Shale area around Dallas-Fort Worth, it has also been causing earthquakes.
And they’re growing both in number and strength

Texas Earthquakes & Fracking

Quoted Text
WASHINGTON — With real-time monitors, scientists have linked a swarm of small
earthquakes west of Fort Worth, Texas, to nearby natural gas wells and wastewater injection.

In 84 days from November 2013 to January 2014, the area around Azle, Texas, shook with
27 magnitude 2 or greater earthquakes, while scientists at Southern Methodist University
and the U.S. Geological Survey monitored the shaking. It's an area that had no recorded
quakes for 150 years on faults that "have been inactive for hundreds of millions of years,"
said SMU geophysicist Matthew Hornbach.

When the volume of injections decreased significantly, so did the shaking.

EPA: No Widespread Harm to Drinking Water From Fracking

WASHINGTON — Hydraulic fracturing to drill for oil and natural gas has not caused widespread harm to drinking water in the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday in a report that also warned of potential contamination of water supplies if safeguards are not maintained.

A draft study issued by the agency found specific instances where poorly constructed drilling wells or improper wastewater management affected drinking water, but said the number of cases was small compared to the large number of wells that use hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking.

The EPA assessment tracked water used throughout the fracking process, from acquiring the water to mixing chemicals at the well site and injecting so-called "fracking fluids" into wells, to collection of wastewater, wastewater treatment and disposal.

The report identified several vulnerabilities to drinking water resources, including fracking's effect on drought-stricken areas; inadequately cased or cemented wells resulting in below-ground migration of gases and liquids; inadequately treated wastewater discharged into drinking water resources; and spills of hydraulic fluids and wastewater.

I could care less if they Frack or not....don't have a horse in this race.......but on the other hand....I don't put much faith in the EPA (another govt run scam) either.
