Happy Birthday Bob Marley (RIP) (6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981)
"War No More Trouble"
"Until the philosophy which holds one race Superior and another inferior Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned Everywhere is war, me say war
That until there is no longer first class And second class citizens of any nation Until the colour of a man's skin Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes Me say war"

Meh. I was never impressed with Bob's music. I found the earlier Ska and Rock-steady artists to be far more entertaining and innovative. Jackie Mittoo and Winston Wright, Clancy Eccles, Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Pioneers, Prince Buster, Desmond Dekker and Ken Boothe and Millie Small, to name just a few. I also found the music of Burning Spear to be a far more authentic and superior form of Reggae than the crap that Marley and the Wailers were putting out. And quite frankly, the group lost it's heart and soul with the departure of Peter Tosh. Bob Marley got the glory for producing a watered down version of the genre. JMHO.

I only occasionally listen to Reggae so I'm not much of an authority on the subject. I do think that Marley brought the music into the mainstream, attracting many fans from other genres who may never have heard it. The lyrics posted above also attracted my attention, for political reasons, as well as musical ones.
My favorite version of "war no more trouble" is by Playing For Change below:

Listening to Bob Marley always put me in a good mood. My daughter used to listen to him as she got ready for high school each morning and it put HER in a good mood. Good words...good intentions.
Maybe not my favorite reggae person but I think a good influence, all in all. We used to have an annual Reggae Fest near us (I think it lasted 15 years) which brought thousands of people together, mostly young folks, and it was extremely positive and peaceful event each year. Then Phish came along and the young people flocked to their sound.

Toronto-based private-equity firm Hilco Consumer Capital has struck a management deal with the Marley estate, which is expected to generate worldwide annual sales in excess of $1 billion by 2012. By some estimates the Marley name, sound, and image already generate as much as $600 million in pirated merchandise. "Richest dead celebrity: Bob Marley" CNN Licensing fees from $1 billion in annual sales should pull in about $100 million for Hilco and the Marleys. That tops the latest figures reported for Presley ($55 million), John Lennon ($15 million) , and Jimi Hendrix ($8 million).

bt, surely you jest! This may sound strange, it probably is strange, but I only like to listen to Reggae when I'm someplace that has hot weather, like Miami, or if I'm on vacation hereabouts and it gets really warm out.
I never seen much talent in Marley or his background group, most of his music was bland. Makes me wonder how he could be even on that list of top selling albums box listed, putting him next to Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin

(Feb 2013) Nielsen Sound Scan, the organisation that tracks music sales across the US, Britain, Canada and Japan, revealed the compilation Legend: Bob Marley and The Wailers Legend (Rarities Edition) - Bob Marley & The Wailers had become the 9th best-selling album of all-time.
Legend has been certified platinum 10 times and according to the US data firm, more than 11 million copies have been sold since records began in 1993; however, the album was originally released in 1984 so the true figure is probably closer to 30 million.
