Seeger popularized "This Land Is Your Land" and "We Shall Overcome" and wrote "If I Had a Hammer" and "Turn, Turn, Turn." He opposed McCarthyism, marched beside MLK and led environmental campaigns.
The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. John Kenneth Galbraith
In 1936, at the age of 17, Pete Seeger joined the Young Communist League (YCL), then at the height of its popularity and influence. In 1942 he became a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) itself. He eventually "drifted away" (his words) from the Party in the late 1940s and 1950s.

Yea... Lots of 'idealistic' kids join causes when they are in their teens, then later see that the cause was not exactly what they thought it was.
Just look at the young Ron Paul Groupies who, at first, were mesmerized by what appeared to be a new, bright star, only to be disillusioned when they found out that Paul was no more than a stale repackaged John Birch Society!

Pete Seeger was the epitome of the American spirit, a great musician and a genuinely nice guy. May he rest in peace.

Cheer for communists and communist supporters, eh? Big government.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

LOL at Pete and Big Govt! Woody Guthrie, W.E.B. DuBois, Founder of the NAACP, J. Robert Oppenheimer 'father of the atomic bomb, actor Paul Robeson, Howard Fast, author of"Spartacus" and "Freedom Road," and at one time, Pete Seeger... all Communists.

Just thinking about ole Pete the other day. He was a great crusader for Upstate NY's environment and the environment in general. This is a great loss to America!
Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie may have been communists (in the purist sense of the word) but they most certainly did NOT believe in BIG government. They believed in rights for every individual and the power of every individual to make a difference in the world. People like Pete Seeger were/are THE best expression of what it truly means to be an American and - indeed - what it means to be a truly free human being. Only a person with a pitifully small, uneducated mind would not understand that and/or would attempt to mock and malign a truly great American hero like Pete Seeger.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
