What I don't understand is, even though he thought Putin's deal was a better one, why the dumb prez doesn't hate the Russians himself, too much to deal with them.

Because he's not ethnically Ukrainian (Russian-Polish) and he was born and raised in eastern Ukraine (more Russian dominated) and is a former member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
As it looks now, this is just about over. The police have abandoned their posts and the Prez is in hiding. The fallout will be if Ukraine stays as one nation or splits into east and west.
