This is an example of an early rotary car engine. Rotary engines still are used today (Mazda) but they are 'internal' rotary engines. The engine in this video is an 'external' rotary engine where the crank is bolted solid to the frame, and the cylinders spin.

A 1918 WWI GNOME ROTARY AEROPLANE ENGINE, being started for the first time in 80 years, while mounted on a test frame. The crank is bolted to the airframe, while the cylinders and the prop spin. Many early aircraft engines used this design. There was no throttle, the engine was either on or off, and speed was regulated by momentarily grounding out the spark.

Back in the 40's, my dad's best friends dad was experimenting with a rotary engine design for American cars, right here in Schenectady. He was a master mechanic and very good machinist with a full shop. Unfortunately, there was an explosion in his Garage while he was testing and it put him in the hospital with burns for a while. After he got out, he abandoned future work on the project. |

The Mazda and Wankel engines used a stationary rotary engine similar to the pic below: |

Speed to redline on rotaries was the real attraction..and they were smooth, but seems very few mechanics knew how to deal with them. |

Rotary engines are total and utter trash when it comes to car engines because they simply do not last.
There is a reason why you hardly ever see any older RX-7 on the roads today....I'm surprised Mazda didn't scrap them years ago.
The biggest problem is with the design itself. Leaks between the engine chambers is a constant and common problem that leads to power loss over time and their high rate of engine failure as compared to piston engines.
Another thing is the engine is also designed to purposely burn oil, so you constantly have to check oil levels.

Entertaining, but really has nothing to do about hp. |
