Last time to come clean Cicero...
Did I post:
"1. there are no economic benefits to military service"
Or did I not.

It's really not that complicated.

Go back and read your own posts.  First you said they make below minimum wage in response to senders, second, you said they make the equivalent to thirty cents per hour in the 60's.  Third, you said that the serviceman I was talking to should be talking about his ECONOMIC BENEFITS in the context of the conversation.

Quoted from Box A Rox

Cicero just listed the reasons HE'D think that someone would join the military... for money (shows how
little he knows about the military)
As an E4 corporal in a combat zone, when I was in, you'd make $165 a month including combat pay.
That's not an 8 hour a day job, but a 24 hour a day job.
There is no going home, or watching tv, or gettin a cold one from the fridge... It was a 24 hour a
day operation.
The vast majority got No Pension, No ROTC tuition assistance, but many got wounds, burns and
broken bones.

So even in the 60's, when you could easily earn $165 a week for a 40 hour week, Military pay was
about $.30 cents an hour.

Yea Cicero.  It was for the   money!

Don't be mad that servicemen are well compensated for their career choice.  And they know it, and are proud to let everybody know.  You just expect me to get all sentimental over somebody's career choice.  Not special - they do it for the money.

Side note, an E4 with 5 years service receives about $48k per year if you combine salary and housing allowance.  And that housing allowance is tax free, about $1600 a month.

Based on stateside duty of Fort Drum, NY
E4 basic pay with 6 yrs service is $28,840
BAH mthly w/dependents is $1266/mth and w/o dependents is $948 if not assigned Government housing.
BAH is based on the median cost for dwellings in the area. If cost of rent/utilities exceeds the BAH, the
member of the military is responsible for those additional expenses.
SIDE NOTE: BAH varies depending on duty station...more in higher cost areas
and less in lower cost areas.
BAH not available UNLESS there is no Government housing available!
So those that live in Government housing (E4 rank w/6 yrs) earn $28,840
FACT, JUST SAYIN', TRUTH !

Your word, not mine... "SPECIAL".  What does "SPECIAL" mean?

Dictionary.com
special

1.of a distinct or particular kind or character
2.being a particular one; particular, individual, or certain
3.pertaining or peculiar to a particular person, thing, instance, etc.; distinctive; unique
4.having a specific or particular function, purpose, etc.
5.distinguished or different from what is ordinary or usual

IMO, numbers 1, 4 and 5 do apply to Veterans.

only def #2 and #3 applies....the rest is subjective....but it doesn't mean above or DESERVING of special treatment

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

get some specials as a result...or buy a label maker and add it yoursel

Like I said...depends on area.
Keeping it real, I used location in NY where this is a military base.
You used local tri-city area where there is no option to live in Government housing.
And who are these people you are relating to...Active Duty what...recruiters?

Active duty, my understanding is he works at Stratton AFB, primarily a desk job, he waits for dead soldiers to come back to hold the military funerals.  Either way, I'm not saying he's rich, but by no means is he a pauper like Box-a-Rox would like people to believe the military men and women are.

No bias slant, these are just the FACTS.  This is a real person I met, that was very happy with his compensation and happy to share it.  I don't know why that is so tough for you to accept.

I can accept it....you just can't accept using a MILITARY BASE which is most representative
because that is large population and typical of base locations, that's all.
You will note I didn't dispute your original $$ posting, just added mine showing
detail related to base living of troops as opposed to individuals at other locations.
By the way, there are full time military people running operations at all Reserve
centers to, and are likely typically compensated as your guy....but they are the
minority compared to those on bases like Drum.

Got curious about your numbers, so went to friend who is active military
and asked him to give me the numbers from the Government charts for
that area.  Here's what he sent me:

E4 w/ 6 yrs service
MILITARY HOUSING AREA: BALLSTON SPA/ALBANY, NY (NY215)
BASIC PAY = $2403.30/mth = $28,839.60 annual
BAS = $323.87/mth = $3,886.44 annual
BAH = $ 1152.00/mth = $13,824 annual (without dependents)
BAH = $1536.00/mth = $18,432 annual (with dependents)

Also, should be noted, that BAS is the money given to Active Military to pay for
their meals.   Meals are not free anymore.

Not questioning you..just called on friend to get Government numbers.

Cicero seems unwilling to even attempt to answer this question... which is the only part of this discussion
that applies.

It's really not that complicated.

I just showed you that an E4 makes upward of $45k per year, not including the compensation from the ROTC scholarship.  A far cry from your $.30 per hour example.

Then I gave you a real life experience of a serviceman boasting openly about his great pay and benefits.

All this is quite a contrast from your example of the $.30 per hour wage.

These aren't the reasons I think someone would join.  I based it on my experience with a serviceman and the FACTUAL data of their compensation compared to the average private sector wage.

Here's part of box's statement claiming that people don't enlist for money.(again)

Why bother continuing Cicero, what he wrote is here for all to see, all he will do is continue to spin it for another 3 pages

Spin my tires?  Um... I asked the same question, which Cicero has evaded for a dozen posts.

I'm not debating Cicero on Military compensation... that is his new found topic.  I gave my position
on that subject several posts ago.

My only request is for Cicero is to put his money where his mouth is...
Cicero is running like Forrest Gump away from his own statement.  What is he afraid of?
Why does he evade, duck and cover, bob and weave???

Cissy made a statement, then ran away from it and continues to put miles between himself
and his words.

He can continue to refuse to back up his post if he is so afraid of his own words.   That is his
choice.
It's a measure of a man's character if he is true to his words or not... and Cissy seems to be
having a problem backing up his own words.

Cicero seems unwilling to even attempt to answer this question...
which is the only part of this discussion that applies.
