Henry, there is a 'fish sauce' called "Nuoc Mam" that is a delicacy in Vietnam.  It kind of smells like
a fish that has been washed up on shore for a week.  Ugggg.

They salt the fish then wrap in leaves and put it in a crock, then bury it for a year or so.
The sauce looks sort of like an "oil & vinegar" salad dressing, but it smells terrible.

See video below.

It's funny you have Wal-Mart up there when you should be adding Price Chopper as well.

Go to the fish dept and in the chest freezers (not the stand up ones with doors) look for a 1lb. bag of salmon. It's usually 'on sale' with buy one/get one free.

Comes from China.

Fish that comes out of Chinese waters is a lot more scary than chickens being processed there.

Buying "Chicken from China" is optional.  Why would anyone do it?

See the "Cheap Food" thread for more on buying quality food from local producers.
http://rotterdamny.info/m-1377779386/s-0/

BTW... We all do know who sells the lowest price products... Why would anyone shop there?

As their logo clearly states... Low Prices... Nothing about Quality.
Chicken From China would fit right in.

Wal-Mart is no worse than any of the other supermarket chains including ones based right here in the Capital District.  In fact, one of my relatives bought a bag of dehydrated apples for snacks for her grand childrenone of those locally based supermarket chains.  Lo and behold in the fineprint ---- MADE IN CHINA.

The thing with the seafood, they warn pregnant women don't eat this or that fish, there is too much mercury, and I know people who won't eat fish from China, why don't the markets just quit stocking the damn stuff? Going to the fish counter is like shopping at the corner used car lot. So much work, that looks good, wait a minute, better not eat that....

At Price Chopper in the fist dept, there is a sign on the wall noting the country of origin of the fish that is for
sale.
They also posts whether it is 'wild' or 'farm raised'.

Yes, so you can study the board and match it to the fish you see in the case, and, provided that you also studied the whole issue at home, you can choose something in the market that is probably safe to eat.
BTW, these warnings about mercury levels and pregnant women? Are high levels of mercury supposed to be okay for men? We pay for these government agencies that are supposed to be looking out for our interests, but now that we have this "global economy", it's back to buyer beware in the market? Then why don't we get rid of the agencies, we could use the savings to pay for the better quality food for ourselves.

China owns us...We WILL buy their fish and chicken.  There is only so much of that funny money they will accept as repayment of our debt.  Eat up!

Once the corporations have finished installing the Common Core curriculum in all government schools, the next generation will not even know there ever was such a thing as food safety.
BTW, Michele Obama was a paid board member for one of WalMart's major food suppliers, but she quit after her husband trash-talked WalMart in remarks to a union when he was looking for votes.

I bought some chicken breasts at Price Chopper today at $6 per pound.

NO antibiotics
NO Growth hormones
100% Vegetarian diet
NO gluten or wheat
USDA inspected

Of course it costs more than WalMart (always low prices, of dubious quality) but that is a choice
that I make.

I'm a member of a food co-op that gets 90% of it's food from within 100 miles of the store, most of the year.
Local beef, bison, chicken, eggs, milk, etc year round.  Produce is often organic and for much of the year
it originates within 100 miles, from local farms. (at times 90% of the produce originates with in 50
miles of the store).

Obviously in winter much of the produce is from much further away, but  they are developing producers
who will supply things like salad greens year round.

Some of the food from our co-op is lower in price than major supermarkets, some the same and some
higher.

If you want quantity, then shop WalMart.  If you want quality, then you have to pay more but also
get more.  The more local and organic the co-op sells, the more local producers will plan to supply in
the future.
You can build a market for 'good food' where none now exists.
