Utah Welfare Drug Testing Results Find Only 12 Drug Users,
at Cost of Over $30,000

Quoted Text
Utah’s newest war on the poor has mandated a quiz for all welfare recipients. This quiz
determines if the person is likely to use drugs. If they are, then they’re required to take
a drug test. Even if they test positive, they are not kicked off of the welfare program,
but instead are required to enter substance abuse programs.

To date, Utah has spent over $30,000 (all taxpayer funded, remember) to quiz and test
these welfare recipients. Was it worth it?

Only twelve people tested positive of the 400+ required to test…twelve.

These twelve will be forced to enter the substance abuse center of their choice, which
they will also pay for (though the courses have a sliding scale to base upon income,
payment is still required).

At what point will Republicans realize that, in cases like these, the end does
not justify the means?

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Drug tests are good for the synthetic urine industry.  They are easily beat unless you blood or hair follicle test.

I am not opposed to recreational drug use, only paying for welfare and knowing that people have enough money to pay for drugs and claim they can't pay for necessities.

Something tells me that Utah isn't the typical welfare state...
I'd love to see the test run in Detroit... I'd bet ANYTHING you want that the results would be dramatically different.

Boxy, you SHOULD be all for this...it's government paid drug counseling and treatment. If it wasn't for this test, 12 people would still be drug users with no recourse for treatment.
Were the 12 on welfare because of their drug problem?
Wouldn't treatment possibly allow some of them to get back to work and be off the welfare rolls?

The drug test program for Welfare recipients in Florida was a similar disaster.  It cost Florida taxpayers
$45,000 more to test than they saved by rejecting drug users who tested positive.

I ask again, what's wrong about identifying those drug abusers so they can get into treatment?
But I forgot, I'll you're about is bashing the GOP ...I should know  better, the sun rose again today.

What's wrong with identifying all users???
If some welfare mom is doing drugs, it likely won't impact my life in any way...
but
If a member of congress, some US Senator or Congressman, or a member of the administration is
using drugs, especially hard drugs, and that person is either impaired by drugs or being blackmailed
to keep quiet about his drug use... then the entire country may be harmed.

We can spend our taxpayer dollars finding out if a welfare mom tokes up or we can spend much less
finding out if those running our country are stoned.

As I thought, Box wants to look the other way and pretend the problem doesn't exist...the easy way out, just keep paying the mortage and the hell with whether the foundation is ready to collapse..after all, it doesn't effect me...

By your logic they should drug test everyone.

For their own good.

I love the way the righties on this board assume that I fit their agenda.

If drug testing welfare recipients were cost effective and could be done fairly I'd say give it
a try.
But...
As I posted above.  Testing a welfare mom won't impact our lives very much
Drug testing US Congress and The Administration could prevent WW3.

One seems of little importance, the other could be HUGE!
