Now, Donohue and his colleagues have shown that extending the data yet another decade (1999-2010) provides the most convincing evidence to date that right-to-carry laws are associated with an increase in violent crime.
"The totality of the evidence based on educated judgments about the best statistical models suggests that right-to-carry laws are associated with substantially higher rates" of aggravated assault, rape, robbery and murder, said Donohue.
The strongest evidence was for aggravated assault, with data suggesting that right-to-carry (RTC) laws increase this crime by an estimated 8 percent – and this may actually be understated, according to the researchers.
"Our analysis of the year-by-year impact of RTC laws also suggests that RTC laws increase aggravated assaults," they wrote.
The evidence is less strong on rape and robbery, Donohue noted. The data from 1979 to 2010 provide evidence that the laws are associated with an increase in rape and robbery.
The murder rate increased in the states with existing right-to-carry laws for the period 1999-2010 when the "confounding influence" of the crack cocaine epidemic is controlled for. The study found that homicides increased in eight states that adopted right-to-carry laws during 1999-2010.
This is based on "educated judgements" and he goes on to state

"Different statistical models can yield different estimated effects, and our ability to ascertain the best model is imperfect," Donohue said, describing this as the most surprising aspect of the study.
That sounds like "well we hypothesized the following but if another researcher looking at the same data may get a different result, we think, maybe, oh who knows....I just wanted to write a controversial report and get published. |

I downloaded the report last night and read through it (I had time to kill...no pun intended ) and I found that this report is just an attempt to discredit another report done in 1997 (Lott and Mustard) by questioning their data and the models they used to filter what was available. By their own admission they are aware that a different result can be arrived from the reading of the data. This report even makes the following statement:
Quoted Text
We recognize, however, that there are additional criminogenic influences for which we cannot fully control. In particular, we suspect that a major shortcoming of all of the models presented is the inability to account for the possible influence of the crack-cocaine epidemic on crime. Although Lott and Mustard (1997) do attempt to control for the potential influence of crack cocaine through the use of cocaine price data based on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's STRIDE program, we find their approach wanting for both theoretical and empirical reasons.
Now I have not read the Lott and Mustard report too and am not going to because frankly these reports are very good at sedating me, but how many "studies" have been done only to be discredited years later by someone else. This back and forth could go on for ever. I believe common sense is a better teller of the facts. Criminals don't care about anyone but themselves and the truth of the matter is that people who are hell bent on harming a fellow human being are not going to follow the laws anyways. Tougher laws on CCW's or guns in general only effect the honest upstanding citizen, and can be compared to the lock on your front door which is only to keep the same honest people out. Some tweaked nut job who wants your flat panel TV for his drug habit is not going to stop at your front door, knock and ask politely for it. He/she is going to use what ever tool is at their disposal be it a gun, knife, hammer, bat, 2X4, or anything else that will separate you from what they want. |

In many states, leaving your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition is a crime, often a Class C Misdemeanor. It would seem that leaving a weapon where children or the mentally ill can access that weapon should be a crime... a felony. |

Is this a picture of somebody you served with box? We see in Iraq, that those that have a right to carry a gun does increase violent crime on the scale of tens of thousands of dead Iraqis. |

assault rifle noun : a gun that can shoot many bullets quickly and that is designed for use by the military assault rifle noun (Concise Encyclopedia) Military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire. Light and portable, yet able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000–1,600 ft (300–500 m), assault rifles have become the standard infantry weapon of modern armies. Their ease of handling makes them ideal for mobile assault troops crowded into personnel carriers or helicopters, as well as for guerrilla fighters engaged in jungle or urban warfare. Widely used assault rifles are the U.S. M16, the Soviet Kalashnikov (the AK-47 and modernized versions), the Belgian FAL and FNC, and the German G3. Seems box joined the right group when he went into the marines |

Yes Henry. I did. In the Marines I had a use for these weapons. But I left the Marines and no longer NEED one. It serves no purpose in civilian life. But Henry Joined This Group and He's Proud Of It!!! Henry NEEDS AN ASSAULT WEAPON TO "FEEL SAFE". |

What do you mean it serves no purpose in civilian life? Police departments are armed to the teeth with "assault rifle", sniper rifles, armored vehicles, flash bang grenades, drones - you name it, the civilian police forces have it. Serving and protecting, with weapons of war. |
