"Carrying a gun openly wherever you go, worn where it can be seen, doesn’t bring about the respect and reassurance so many think they are receiving by doing so. In actuality, when many people see a citizen wearing a gun it brings upon fear and concern. If what Open Carry activists want is to be feared by the public at large, well, they may in fact be doing just that.

The victim of a harrowing gunpoint robbery in Mississippi on Saturday grabbed a gun out of his truck and opened fire, killing one robber and sending the other fleeing.
Jackson Police said the victim turned the tables on a pair of robbers after he was robbed of his wallet and forced to drive to an ATM to get money, Mississippi News Now reported.
Police found the body of robbery suspect Edwin Robinson, 23, on Pinewood Drive, a residential street in northeast Jackson. They said the shooting appeared justified.
“I heard about six gunshots at about 6:30 a.m., went to let one of my dogs out and heard some more gunshots,” a resident told the station. “We saw people standing around, and a body and a truck.”
The station said the victim of the stick-up was a doctor. He was not hurt.
Police told the station the doctor was in the driveway of his home when Robinson and another man surprised him. They had guns and announced a robbery.
Police said the robbers forced the victim into his home to get his wallet. Then they forced him in his own Toyota truck to drive to a local ATM.
Robinson was killed not far from the doctor's house.
The doctor retrieved his gun from the truck after one of the robbers then threatened to go back to the doctor’s house to harm his wife, police said.
Mississippi News Now said the robber who fled was wearing a bandanna. He was believed driving a tan SUV with no tags.

Will be interesting to see how far up this goes. I'll also have to find out if similar suits are/were filed here in NY since this ruling would effect current NYS Law.
[quote] Federal Judge Smacks Down D.C. Gun Permit Requirement
U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Scullin Jr. placed a hold on Washington D.C.’s mandate that firearm owners must have a “good reason” to get a concealed carry permit in the District. The judge said the requirement took away citizens’ Second Amendment rights.
Judge Scullin granted a preliminary injunction as a result of a lawsuit brought forth by three gun owners who sought to overturn the bureaucratic D.C. gun law claiming the regulations surrounding it make it impossible for the majority of law abiding individuals to qualify for a D.C. firearms permit.
“For all intents and purposes, this requirement makes it impossible for the overwhelming majority of law-abiding citizens to obtain licenses to carry handguns in public for self-defense, thereby depriving them of their Second Amendment right to bear arms,” Judge Scullin wrote within his 23 page opinion.
Local lawmakers created the D.C. gun permitting process after Scullin ruled the District’s long-time ban on carrying firearms in public was unconstitutional last year. The process was intended to set up a process for residents and non-residents alike to apply for concealed carry permits. (RELATED: Court Strikes Down D.C.’s Ban On Carrying Handguns In Public)
Prior the passage of the law for gun permits, law-abiding citizens with permits from other states were allowed to carry in D.C. for a period time before the District took legal action to end the brief carry period.

Another responsible gun owner is grieving his toddler's untimely death after finding a loaded gun on a dresser.
Quoted Text
The toddler grabbed a loaded gun that had been placed on a dresser as he was playing alone in the bedroom of a house in Meherrin, a village in Lunenburg County, Virginia, on Monday (25 May), authorities said.
He subsequently pulled the trigger, causing the weapon to go off. Emergency services took him to a local hospital, where he arrived in critical condition and doctors confirmed on Wednesday that he had died.
The Lunenburg County Sheriff office said the child had arrived in town with his family for Memorial Day commemorations.
Police have opened an investigation but no charges have been filed so far. The family is said to be cooperating with detectives.
The incident sparked appeals to gun owners to keep their weapons in a safe place, out of children's reach.
"Whenever somebody walks in the door of your home, if you're a gun owner, you need to go through mentally and think where are my guns and are they secure," firearms instructor Debra Smith told local broadcaster WTVR.
The case is also likely to fuel the debate on the US gun culture and laws. In April a police chief urged the country to end its "fascination" with firearms after a similar incident in which an infant was shot dead by a three-year-old boy who had picked up an unattended gun in Cleveland.
"This fascination that we have with handguns, not just in this city but in this country, has to stop. This is a senseless loss of life," commented the local police chief Calvin Williams.
According to David Waldman at Daily Kos, this is the 35th child to die due to accidental gunfire this year. That's more than one per week!

A Bronx politician wants the sins of New York's children visited upon their parents.
City Council member Andy King plans to ask state legislators to hold mom and dad liable if their law-breaking kids aged 17 and under are caught carrying guns.
"We want to hold parents accountable," the Bronx Democrat said Tuesday. "You need to know what your children are doing. You brought them into this world."
The councilman hoped to get his resolution before the state Legislature later this month, and planned to bring a similar proposal before the City Council.
"We are struggling with homicides and shootings," said King. "And more murders are being committed by guns."
King was joined by anti-gun violence advocates, other politicians and students outside the Evander Childs Educational Complex.
Before its reinvention as six smaller schools, Evander Childs High School in the Bronx had a reputation for violence.
King, an alumnus of the school, joined others in wearing a bright orange shirt to spread the message of peace.
"We have to do something to give (students) opportunities so they don't engage in violent behavior toward one another," he said.
Erica Ford, head of the anti-gun initiative Life Camp, urged parents to keep a closer eye on their kids.
"It is our children who are committing crimes in our neighborhoods," said Ford. "We don't need more police locking up all our kids. We are the answer."

Suicides by gun accounted for about six of every 10 firearm deaths in 2010 and just over half of all suicides, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since the CDC began publishing data in 1981, gun suicides have outnumbered gun homicides. But as gun homicides have declined sharply in recent years, suicides have become a greater share of all firearm deaths: the 61% share in 2010 was the highest on record. That year there were 19,392 suicides by firearm compared to 11,078 homicides by gun (35% of all firearm deaths). The rest were accidents, police shootings and unknown causes. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/05/24/suicides-account-for-most-gun-deaths/
