I've been feeding Ruby Throated Hummingbirds for 20 years or more. They are interesting creatures. When migrating they have the ability to shut down one half of their brain, and shut down the opposite eye, so that they can fly over hundreds of miles of open water without sleeping. (A similar trait that they share with dolphins).
The males have iridescent feathers on their throats that they use for attracting females. They turn those feathers toward the female and those feathers will turn from black to bright shimmering red.

I used to shut down half my brain and one eye to drive home drunk.
I've only seen one hummingbird my whole life. Never knew how they migrated. Thanks for the info.
RP. Buy a small hummingbird feeder and hang it near your kitchen or LR window. They are inexpensive and don't buy the commercial feed, just boil water and add a 1/4 cup of sugar. It will take them about a week or 10 days, and you'll have hummingbirds.

If the feeder is mostly in the shade, you will only have to clean and refill it once a week. This time of year you can see the babies come to the feeder with mom. They look like the adults but tails and beaks are much shorter. Once the birds are used to you being at the window, you can get a close up view of them in detail. When they feed they have these long "W" shaped tongues to lap up nectar from flowers. The buzz from their wings is something to hear, especially up close. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n71TgeWXd0
