I love the fact that we are a constitutional republic created to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority, and gloating that a minority constituency is irrelevant and must submit to the majority. If you put any other group of people into the category of minority, lefties like box would be screaming that the democrat party is the party that protects the minority. Not in the case of evangelicals, it's celebrated as a political victory for leftists.
I blame the evangelicals for playing the same game. They should have preached their right under the constitution to practice their religion, not their majority position to push public policy. They were seduced into a game that they may lose.
The same Constitution that protects every individual's right to worship also protect's every individual's (including Evangelicals) right to speech, assembly and vote ... and therefore the right to influence or "push" public policy. Having said that -- the public debate on every issue should be honest, factual and conducted in a civil manner. When the Obama-Pelosi-Tonko types go after (threats of I.R.S. bullying as an example) Pro-Life groups or any other groups that oppose their positions that is when our constutional republic is threatened. |
