Being poor is probably something you don't understand unlike me, I don't blame others for my problems and I don't ask for handouts. If you made out good in life I'm happy for you, it doesn't mean I'm jealous or want your stuff for free and it definitely doesn't mean I want the government to take from you to give to me. So I think it is you who doesn't understand.

You don't even know what you were even getting at, you just love to post stuff you know nothing about or even had to live through, typical liberal.

I am not wealthy now but live comfortably.
What makes you assume that I have always been in this situation??? Why do you assume that you can speak from experience, but I can't on the issue of being poor or in need? (Poor comes in all political views, from ultra liberal to ultra conservative and everywhere inbetween)
It seems a recurring theme with you Henry. If my views don't match your expectation, you come to conclusions based on no facts at all, but instead based on YOUR opinion of what I SHOULD THINK.
According to Henry... I've never been poor, he is mistaken. According to Henry... My views on good gun laws means that I don't own any guns... wrong again.
Shall I impose similar restrictions on you? Should I judge you on MY politics instead of your words? Should I judge you on MY views of what I think, instead of your stated experience?

The poor are poor because of trillions of dollars spent on war. We make our people poor and the nation we are at war with poor. So the few rich can control the resources.
The greedy government, even when not in a war, spent very little on improving the conditions of the poor. Instead the government gave billions of dollars to friends, family, and to countries that hate us.

Box who does not understand it is the government itself. The poster shows what looks like a veteran, SO why is he out on the street "begging" for money? Where are his veterans benefits? Why is there not an organization that he can go to for help? But wait there is ! He could walk into any American Legion Post etc. and tell them he needs help.
Hell the recruiting stations are happy to see anyone walk in, they even go to our high schools. So WHERE are they when a Vet is out on the street?
Could be this veteran can't find a job, like so MANY Americans.
Wow! A soldier is victim of circumstance? I KNEW they were just order takers!
I didn't know people went to a poverty recruitment center and enlisted to be poor.

That guy probably rakes in more money sitting on his a$$ then a minimum wage worker busting his, the costume is just a nice touch for sympathy and I guarantee it works on those who don't know better. There is no reason for him to be in his BDU's unless he is on active duty, he knows that but he also knows that this angle works.

Henry your absolutely right ! This "poster" was staged. I know there are homeless vets and like many the economy and other circumstances has hit some hard.
My Mom and sister came upon a man in downtown Albany in the dead of winter a few years back, very early morning hours, the man huddled near a bridge overpass. My Mom rolls down the window slightly and asks if he needs help. It ends up he was a vet and had slept there all night. She asked why he didn't at least go to a shelter to get out of the cold or to the VA and he said he didn't like shelters. She offered him the little money she had on her and he refused, said he didn't take handouts.
So she left , went home grabbed one of her hubbys used coat, a pair of gloves and a blanket, stopped at dunkin doughnuts and returned to find the man still there. She gave him the coat gloves and blanket and the hot coffee and sandwich and he actually cried.
Guess what I'm getting at is we all can do an act of kindness and it won't change a person's life but just give them that moment of warmth and caring.
The government forces some to depend on it. Some people depend on themselves and the kindness of others.
This data is old but I would assume that Social Security is more needed today than ever...
Quoted Text
Social Security reduces the proportion of elderly people living in poverty from nearly one in two to fewer than one in eight, according to a new study released today of Census data. The study found that in 1997, nearly half of all elderly people — 47.6 percent — had incomes below the poverty line before receipt of Social Security benefits. After receiving Social Security benefits, only 11.9 percent remained poor.
As a result, the study said, Social Security raised out of poverty more than one in every three elderly Americans. The program lifted 11.4 million elderly people above the poverty line.
Without Social Security, the study found, 15.3 million elderly had incomes below the poverty line. After Social Security, only 3.8 million elderly did. Three-fourths of those elderly people who would have been poor without Social Security were lifted from poverty by it.
The study, "Social Security and Poverty Among the Elderly," found Social Security's effects in shrinking poverty to be most striking among elderly women. Seven million of the 11.4 million elderly people whom Social Security lifted from poverty in 1997 — more than 60 percent — were women.
"The government forces some to depend on it. Some people depend on themselves and the kindness of others." I wonder how Granny would be doing if govt didn't FORCE HER TO DEPEND... Or if Granny was surviving on the KINDNESS OF STRANGERS?
