Services set for mother, daughter found killed in their Rotterdam home
Monday, April 15, 2013
By Steven Cook (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

ROTTERDAM — Services for the mother and daughter found killed in their Rotterdam home last week have been scheduled for later this week, according to their obituaries.

Meanwhile, the man accused of breaking into their home and doing them harm is set for his next court appearance this evening in Rotterdam Town Court.

Services for Tammy McCormack and her daughter Jessica have both been scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. at Kateri Takewietha Church, Rosa Road, Schenectady.

Calling hours for both have been scheduled for Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 at DeMarco Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam.

Tammy McCormack, 52, and her daughter Jessica McCormack, 22, were both found dead Wednesday inside their 1142 Inner Drive home after Tammy McCormack failed to show up for work that morning.

Their deaths have been ruled homicides, their causes of death have not been released.

Charged with breaking into their home and causing them physical injury is Brice C. Rivenburgh, 28, of 2501 Oaklawn Ave.

Rivenburgh, who authorities say once had a relationship with Jessica McCormack, faces one count of first-degree burglary. Further charges are pending, possibly through grand jury action. Though the burglary charge accuses Rivenburgh of causing physical injury to two people at the residence, he has not been charged directly in the deaths.

Rivenburgh is scheduled for his next court appearance this evening at 5 p.m. in Rotterdam Town Court. There, Rivenburgh could learn whether an indictment has been handed up in the case, though not necessarily the contents of any indictment.

According to her obituary, Jessica McCormack graduated from Schenectady County Community College and was working toward a career in dental hygiene.

She loved swimming and music. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family.

It was common knowledge to those who knew her, her obituary reads, that she was terrified of bugs, loved fried pickles and enjoyed margaritas and game nights.

"She was warm-hearted, funny, kind and always wanted to believe that there was good in everybody," her obituary reads.

Jessica was the daughter of Tammy and Keith McCormack. Her father passed away in June 2009. The parents owned and operated Lyle's Hoagies. Tammy McCormack also worked with the Schenectady City School District as a human resources specialist.

The mother is described in her obituary as the neighborhood mom, someone who was kind to everyone. She had an "exceptional work ethic," never putting herself before others.

She also loved to cook, bake, read and "was an avid QVC shopper."

"Tammy was a genuine, devoted mother and truly the heart and soul of her family," her obituary reads.

Both Tammy and her daughter were described as animal lovers, loving their two pugs, Trixie and Gus.

Donations made in the McCormacks names are requested to be sent, according to the obituaries, to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the local ASPCA.

Some people here don't know when to quit campaining for themselves and others.
My heart goes out to all those effected by this.
Living in the neigborhood, i wonder if it's the same lady who i would see walking her two pugs every morning on the way to work. I"m not quite sure.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Man held after Rotterdam deaths appears in court
By Paul Nelson
Published 6:30 pm, Monday, April 15, 2013

ROTTERDAM — A man charged in connection with the deaths last week of a town mother and daughter made a brief appearance Monday in town court.

A judge told Brice Rivenburgh that a Schenectady County grand jury has taken action and Rivenburgh's case would be transferred to county court.

Tammy McCormack, 52, and Jessica McCormack, 22, were found strangled Wednesday in separate upstairs bedrooms at their 1142 Inner Drive home.

Family members of the McCormacks were in court Monday to watch the proceeding.

Rotterdam Town Justice Kenneth Litz sent Rivenburgh, 28, of Rotterdam back to jail without bail. Security in the courtroom was tight. There were two Rotterdam detectives and six correction officers assigned to keep an eye on things.

Rivenburgh was represented in court by assistant Public Defender Bill Nowak.

Rivenburgh was taken into custody on the day of the killings. He was charged with first-degree burglary at the McCormack home, although he has not been charged with either of the killings.

Lt. Michael Brown of the town police department said last week that Rivenburgh and Jessica McCormack "had a relationship" but police were trying to determine if they were still in contact at the time of the slayings.

this would not have happened when I was a youth - when we knew our police officers by name

there is no excuse for this tragedy in Rotterdam - it saddens my heart for the families involved

there will be demands for Justice - but Justice cannot bring the lost back,  Justice can never repay the loss

this issue lies with our police chief for he is solely responsible for our communities safety

the last two police chiefs have let this community down - one retires soon, the other sits on the county leg

it seems they use a different dictionary

mine says

police - The civil force of local government, responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the maintenance of public order.

theirs says

law enforcement,  - ensuring obedience to the laws

- we will spend thousands on reaction to this horrible crime

2 detectives and 6 correction officers   for one man......... in court

town of 28,000 - one officer protects price chopper, the others nowhere to be found - until we have a double murder of multiple bombings then they line up for overtime

good to hear another reactionary service will save the Hamburg st area - 'central dispatch'

to our next police chief - lets return to prevention and detection so no other Rotterdam family suffers such an act.

this is not political but making a point that something is wrong in our town  - bombings, murders, what will be next?     shooting at the hess or getty

The idea that any town, city, village or jerk water bus stop is free or can be free of crime is an absurd paradigm. Just ask Saratoga. There have been murders, kidnappings, strong arm robberies, drug rings, gambling rings etc. for as long as I can remember here. And I can remember back to 1953 when my family moved here. The still unsolved Cedarlawn Ave. murder. The murder on Helderberg Ave. where the bodies were buried in the backyard. The kidnapping of a local grocer etc., crime has always been here. Maybe not to the degree that it is in some other places, but it's been here. Can things be better? Of course they can. Will we ever go back to 1953? Nope. Is the current or past  police and town leaders to blame? I have no idea nor will I speculate or hypothesize. I just didn't think this thread was the place for it. As much as you'd like to deny it exit3 your post was political IMHO.

As far as I'm concerned the original intent of this thread as I saw it is over. You folks want to use it for anything other than the actual reporting of the news of the case have at it. I'll post any additional "facts" I come across in their own thread. I'm done posting in this one. I'm spent.

Unless ya want cops in yer daily personal business because of a few nut cases...these horrific things will continue to happen.

when a society is in decline, when drugs are the product in demand, when drug dealing is the only good paying job out there, when the school systems continue to be substandard, when families are being redefined, when the government is blatantly corrupt, when churches refuse to preach the obvious because they are at risk of losing their tax exempt status, when gin mills are considered 'economic growth'...................don't blame the cops 100%....they may be a 'part' of the problem...but not THE problem. imho

unless cops lived in this house or were watching it 24/7......this was gonna happen anyway!

it's the decline of society.

Man now faces murder charges in Rotterdam case
By Paul Nelson
Updated 12:12 pm, Tuesday, April 23, 2013

A grand jury indicted Brice Rivenburgh on four counts of first-degree murder, accusing him of strangling his former girlfriend and her mother during a burglary at the women's Rotterdam home earlier this month.

Rivenburgh could face up to life in prison if convicted of those charges.

The indictment alleges he tried to cover his tracks by torching the home where Tammy McCormack and Jessica McCormack were found dead. He also sent a text message to Jessica McCormack, his former girlfriend, after she was dead, a move that the grand jury characterized as an effort as an effort to throw investigators off the trail.

The indictment was handed up Tuesday morning. Rivenburgh also is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, burglary and multiple sex crimes including rape and sexual abuse.

Rivenburgh, 28,was originally accused of burglarizing the 1142 Inner Drive home where Tammy McCormack, 52, and Jessica "Jessie" McCormack, 22, the women were found dead on April 10.

Rivenburgh is accused of raping and sexually abusing Jessica McCormack.

He's also accused of attempted arson for allegedly trying to burn down the home to conceal evidence.

Since his arrest on the burglary charge, Rivenburgh has been held without bail at the Schenectady County Jail.

Schenectady County District Attorney Robert M. Carney and Rotterdam police are expected to hold a news conference about the case later in the day.
