Disney's official fan club has just broken the news on Twitter:
Annette Funicello has died at age 70.
The actress, singer and beloved Mousketeer had been hospitalized in Bakersfield due to complications from multiple sclerosis, according to Extra.
Her family confirmed to Extra that Funicello died from complications of multiple sclerosis. They were by her side when she was taken off life support. Funicello had been in an MS coma for years, reports the site.
Funicello was 12 when she became a Mouseketeer. As a teen, she was launched on a successful singing and acting career, but she really gained popularity when she co-starred with Frankie Avalon in a series of "Beach Party" movies in the mid-1960s.
In 1992, Annette announced she had MS.
Funicello was married to her first husband, Jack Gilardi, from 1965 until 1981, and had three children. In 1986, she married California harness racing horse breeder/trainer Glen Holt.
The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. John Kenneth Galbraith
She had been suffering for a long time with MS. I saw a story on her a few years ago...I was shocked by how far she had slipped since she stopped making public appearances in the late 90's....this end was merciful.

Yeah, her husband was amazing...he committed his entire life to her both financially and physically. I hope he gets some peace knowing he did all he could.

Once when I was doing a Chubby Checker tour, we visited the set of "Back To The Beach" because Chubby was friends with most of the cast. We all met the cast, and when our perpetually drunk bass player shook Annette's hand, he said "Thank You, you have no idea how much this means to me, to which she replied "how so?"
"That's the same hand I used to jerk off to your movies". I expected her to slap him but instead she just replied "glad I could help", and walked away.

Classic response...somehow, I think she was told that before!
