Obama: Doctors Should Ask About Guns in Homes

You’re visiting a doctor because you have flu symptoms. After checking your heart, pulse and other vital signs, the doctor says, “By the way, the federal government has authorized me to ask you: What type and how many guns do you have in your home?"

Sound like George Orwell’s 1984?

No. It’s 2013.

And if President Barack Obama gets his way by executive order, doctors across the country could play a key role in his new gun control initiative.

Urgent: Obamacare — Find out the new rules before it's too late. Get the Amazon #1 bestselling guide — Go Here Now

Obama on Wednesday released 23 executive actions and orders to limit gun usage. And many already have stirred significant controversy.

Order 16, for example, might raise serious concerns with privacy advocates. The order, as summarized, states federal agencies will “clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.”

In addition, a fact sheet provided by the White House with the order list elaborates: “Clarify that no federal law prevents health care providers from warning law enforcement authorities about threats of violence.”

The fact sheet continues: “Doctors and other mental health professionals play an important role in protecting the safety of their patients and the broader community by reporting direct and credible threats of violence to the authorities. But there is public confusion about whether federal law prohibits such reports about threats of violence. The Department of Health and Human Services is issuing a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits these reports in any way.

“Doctors and other health care providers also need to be able to ask about firearms in their patients’ homes and safe storage of those firearms, especially if their patients show signs of certain mental illnesses or if they have a young child or mentally ill family member at home. Some have incorrectly claimed that language in the Affordable Care Act prohibits doctors from asking their patients about guns and gun safety. Medical groups also continue to fight against state laws attempting to ban doctors from asking these questions.

“The Administration will issue guidance clarifying that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit or otherwise regulate communication between doctors and patients, including about firearms.”

In 2010, the Affordable Care Act, dubbed Obamacare, was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. The law totals more than 2,700 pages, but also grants the president and federal agencies sweeping powers over health care. So far, more than 13,000 pages of additional federal regulations have been issued with more to come.

The National Rifle Association has long argued that doctors violate patients’ Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms by asking about gun ownership.

A federal judge in July issued a permanent injunction against enforcement of a Florida law that would have prohibited doctors from asking patients about gun ownership in many instances, saying the prohibition impinged on doctors’ First Amendment right to speak with their patients about gun safety.

The law would have allowed physicians to ask about guns if it seemed relevant to a patient's medical care or safety — for example, if a patient was severely depressed or experiencing violence in the home.

Six other states — Alabama, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia — have considered similar legislation in recent years.

According to Kaiser Health News, the 2010 health care reform bill doesn't prevent doctors from asking about guns, but it does prohibit insurers, employers, and the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services from asking about gun ownership in many instances, and it prohibits HHS from collecting such data.

While revealing a summarized version of President Obama’s executive order Wednesday, the White House has yet to publish the full details and scope of the orders, including the one relating to doctors and guns.

Box and some others on this board didn't get sick watching that video, they may have actually become sexually aroused lusting over the compliance officers show of violent force.  It was almost like a real life snuff film.  The only thing that would have made it better for them is if they killed'em.

When I had my first physical from this doctor, he asked me if I had any guns at home.  I said yes.  He
asked if they were locked... I replied that they had trigger locks.  He said OK, and that was that.

He also asked me if I drank or if I smoked and if I wore my seatbelt...  I have no problem with any of that.
All of those questions are related to my health, and my health is the reason that I went to see him in the
first place.  If I didn't want to answer those questions, I could have declined.

I remember when "liberals" denounced the government when they attacked citizens and beat them. Now "liberals" are the ones training the forces to do the beatings. Ahhh, the seed of the sixties has been reaped!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

I see no problem with the actions of the officers,

Maybe you should watch the video again, the cop gave the guy 2 seconds before he started to choke him out and if you look again the guy was turning around and started to put his arms behind him. He was going to follow orders but I guess the pig didn't think he moved fast enough for his liking.

A surveillance video obtained by Channel 3 of a confrontation between Chattanooga Police and federal inmate Adam Tatum has prompted a news conference Thursday morning. The confrontation between Chattanooga Police and federal inmate Adam Tatum at the Salvation Army's halfway house last June that put Tatum in the hospital with broken bones and got Officers Sean Emmer and Adam Cooley fired for use of excessive force. Tatum's attorney, Robin Flores, obtained the video through court order from the Hamilton County District Attorney General's office. He's seeking to have Tatum's convictions thrown out, after Tatum pleaded guilty to assaulting the officers. "We counted at least 200 blows, 200 individual blows," says Tatum's attorney, Robin Flores. "They were dragging him by his broken leg."" - WRCBTV -

Chattanooga Police Chief Bobby Dodd called the police beating of federal inmate Adam Tatum one of the worst cases he has seen in his 25-year career.

“Unfortunately we’re in a situation, in an occupation that’s very volatile, sometimes,” Dodd said in a news conference this morning. “Sometimes split-second decisions can end your career and actually put you in jail.

“But our department, the city of Chattanooga, Chattanooga Police Department, we do not condone this activity. Nor will it be tolerated.”

A video released Wednesday night by Adam Tatum’s attorney, Robin Flores, shows former Officers Sean Emmer and Adam Cooley ruthlessly beating Tatum.

At the time of the June 14 incident, Tatum was housed in the Salvation Army building on McCallie Avenue when officers were called to respond to a disorder. Tatum was kicking the door of a control room where staff members were inside.

The building’s surveillance cameras show inmate Adrian McGhee tried to talk Tatum down. At the time, Tatum was wielding a knife when staff members called authorities.

For about 10 minutes, officers delivered blows to Tatum, who was repeatedly told to get on the ground and roll over. Tatum fled to another room initially after the knife was taken away from him, but through much of the struggle, Tatum remained on the ground.

Tatum suffered six fractures to his right leg and two fractures to his left leg, including a compound fracture. His attorney has filed a $50 million lawsuit on his behalf.

Both Emmer and Cooley are appealing to get their jobs back.

Dodd says he will appeal to an administrative law judge to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“I’ll lay the facts out and hopefully that person will look at this and say, ‘It’s excessive. It’s outside the policies. And these officers do not need to be on the streets.’ I personally would not subject the citizens of Chattanooga to these two officers and the type of action they took,” Dodd said.

Within a couple of hours of Dodd’s news conference, attorneys representing Emmer and Cooley issued a statement on behalf of the ex-officers.

“Chattanooga officers are trained to never assume that a suspect has only one weapon. This city has seen officers killed in the line of duty after de-escalating force only to learn that the criminal has a second weapon,” according to a statement from attorneys Stevie Phillips and Bryan Hoss.

“Here, Tatum turned on these officers with a knife and attacked. He repeatedly ignored the lawful orders to ‘stop resisting’ and ‘put your hands behind your back.’”

A Hamilton County grand jury declined to indict the officers. However, it’s possible federal charges will be handed down.
