McLAUGHLIN: MOSCOW WOULD BE PROUD OF NEW YORK

Statement from Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C,I-Melrose)

Moscow would be proud of our state Legislature and Executive Chamber, but every New Yorker should be outraged. It is a fact that the Governor used a politically expedient tactic and abused his 'message of necessity' power to jam an extremely flawed and error-riddled bill into law. This bill will do nothing to make New York safer, while doing much to endanger the safety of law-abiding citizens. Criminals, as they always do, will ignore this law.

This bill was a rushed, knee-jerk reaction in an effort to gain national attention in the wake of tragedies in Newtown and Webster and capitalize on an emotional public not fully prepared to address the real problem: control. This was not about guns. It was about control. This Governor and state Legislature are ill-advised to be taking a victory lap while mental health issues, prescription drug abuse and the role of anti-depressants in these mass shootings, which should have been the true substance of the bill, went so poorly addressed.

I’m disappointed in the Governor and the Legislature for cynically and callously standing on the graves of the victims of Newtown and Webster and using their deaths to advance a flawed piece of legislation that had zero public, technical, scientific, expert or legislative input. This bill is far from being “best.” Turning law abiding citizens into criminals is nothing to be proud of.

No one in the Assembly Chamber, the Senate Chamber or on ANY floor of the Capitol is worthy of shining the boots of our founding fathers, yet they arrogantly think they can trample on the Constitution. This bill is an all-out attack on the Constitutional rights of American citizens.

Sure, if we are dealing with RELEVANT facts.
Give me the stats of gun deaths during the commission of a crime...after all, this is what all the legislation is about. Something tells me the state rankings will be MARKEDLY different.

Also, you fail to mention that nationally, over half the gun deaths are from Suicide.

So you are FOR gun deaths by suicide??? I would hope that we could reduce suicide in most cases.

BTW... if you want to discuss some other set of facts, please present them... Don't expect me to do
your research for you...

I'm not for suicide by any means, but people who want to commit suicide will find a way, whether its by gun or not. People who commit suicide, unless its because of a terminal illness, are mentally ill, you make the false assumption that the mental ill think like a sane person.

Your "facts" are not worth discussing because they are not accurate for the discussion at hand. They don't discriminate between gun crime, gun accidents, and suicides. And because of that, they are worthless when debating whether strict gun laws really reduce gun CRIME.

Again... if you want to discuss a different subject, present your facts and we can discuss them.
My facts show (in general) that if you live in a strict gun law state, you are less likely to die from
a gun... if you live in a lax gun law state you are more likely to die from a gun.
If you want to add to that discussion then please do.

Of course accidents will happen.  But is there a difference between a DEAD person from a gun.  Are you less dead if you die by a gun from suicide?  Is Adam Lanza less dead than the little children he riddled with bullets--some of th e kids had 11 bullets in their little bodies.  Are you people absolutely insane?  YOU DON'T NEED AN ASSUALT STYLE WEAPON UNLESS YOU ARE IN A WAR ZONE FIGHTING THE OPPOSITE TEAM.  WTH is wrong with all of you?  Box--please some wisdom here. Talk about mental health....a damn psychiatrist could do a "killing" just on this board.  (sorry for the pun)

Yossi, I thought all this "assault weapon" hysteria was about crime..or was I wrong?
Stop with "you don't need an assault weapon" crap.. you don't a cigarette or Alcohol either, but they are available and cause more death every year than all gun deaths COMBINED...I don't hear any ban clamor about them..

And let's get another thing straight..Assault weapons are used in 2%-8% of all gun crime, depending on what statistics you believe. The rest of gun crime was committed with some other type of gun.

"Assault" weapons look scary and are an easy sell to the public to ban. They are low hanging fruit.
But if you really want to make an impact on what guns are being used in the majority of the crimes, your aiming at the wrong target...

Its amazing how many people KNOW what is best for others when it comes to self defense and what gun suits them best. And why do police need assault rifles then, are they going to a war zone, no they want the proper tool to stop the situation quickly if need to. The guns and magazines are already out there, no law is going to make them dissapear,20-50 years from now assault rifles will still be here and all the crying isn't going to stop it. This does not mean we shouldn't try to find ground to help protect our children, something that this law failed at miserably.
