Man charged in alleged hatchet attack: 'It's a misunderstanding'

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) – A man accused of attacking a woman with a hatchet after holding her inside his apartment for several hours has been charged in the case.
Michael Ellery, 50, faces four felonies including criminal confinement, intimidation, battery with a deadly weapon and drug possession.

Ellery appeared in court on Friday and spoke to WAVE 3 News about the allegations.
"It's a misunderstanding because she's a drug addict," Ellery said, denying that he attacked the woman whom he called his girlfriend.
Police documents allege Ellery assaulted a woman visiting his apartment because she didn't want to smoke cocaine with him.
Police said the incident happened December 22 in Jeffersonville's Claysburg Two Towers.
"She was trying to leave the apartment, and he struck her with a hatchet," said Clark County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jeremy Mull. " Ultimately, she was able to leave and call 911."
Ellery claims the woman flipped out when he told her she needed to quit her drug habit. "I just got mad because she was my girlfriend," Ellery said. "She started doing bigger drugs with another girl in my building, like heroin. I just got mad. I didn't do any of that."
When asked whether he hit the woman with a hatchet, Ellery replied, "I'm not that type of person. My mother taught me to never fight women at all."
