"He said it's his responsibility. "I'm doing this because we need hope man. We need hope," explained Pritchard. He's a volunteer. He's not getting paid. He's not even armed, but parent said they feel a whole lot better about leaving their children at school while he's been at the front door." |

I would not send my child to a school with a man wearing fatigues guarding the door. Most parents in that school district are stupid if they feel a man wearing fatigues at the entrance of an elementary school helps them cope with their irrational fears. |

I think that the kids have already had the fear instilled in them so the guy is probably not making it any worse. It is kind of a mixed message though. What are soldiers for? Killing. More kids are killed by a parent or someone they know. People always are most afraid of the things that are least likely to happen. |

His intentions are good but I don't see why anyone would feel safer with him standing there, lets be perfectly honest here, say a shooter God forbid made their way to that school what would he be able to do, he would be a sitting duck and probably be the first to be shot at because he appears to be a threat to the gunman. I support his actions but he should dump the fatigues, better yet give him a concealed permit and give him a job as a plain clothes guard. |

I too think he has good intentions, and worried about the children. I don't think he instills fear into the kids as I'm sure they were told ahead of time that so and so's father is going to be welcoming everyone at the door. I just hope they didn't say guarding the door. As for the concealed and permit to carry yeah but only problem is the military that come home are put on a watch list, isn't that a kick in the a**, they go and serve and than are watched themselves |

Many on this board, hate the military, are suspicious of the police or anyone who represents the govt... SO Who should stand guard at the school door???
A mom? A Plumber? An ex military who now works for a security company for minimum wage??? A TeaBagger militia with an itchy trigger finger???
IMO, if our society decides that guards are needed at elementary schools, they should be a designated trained force from the local police or sheriff.

I'm not questioning the former marine's intentions, he most likely good intentions. I question the schools judgement. They don't have to say he's guarding the door, it is clear, he is guarding the door. An man in fatigues hasn't been there since these children have been attending school. Now, suddenly, after Sandy Hook, a man dressed in his fatigues is greeting people? What's a 6 and 7 year old supposed to think? |

I wouldn't trust any self proclaimed 'volunteer' to stand guard of our children.
I also don't question his motives. |

Quoted Text
Then there’s one scenario that often comes up: rogue countries or developers creating completely autonomous killer bots and unleashing them onto the world. How feasible is this really? That question has not been rigorously answered, which is exactly why a Center like the one being proposed is necessary.
Those who are at the cutting edge of technology are rarely in a position to question the ethics of what they are bringing into the world until it is too late. Having expert researchers dedicated to studying these breakthrough technologies and assessing their threat to the human race is imperative.

the truth of the matter is........we live in a world of constant conflict, division, no social/moral values, lack of economic discipline, hatred and selfishness......and our 24/7 news makes sure of it that we are visually aware of it every second of every day.
Until we all personally have a 'change of heart', all of the banned guns, men in fatigues, government programs will not make ANY difference whatsoever. imho |
