10 States Work To Prevent Gun Violence:

– New York: The state will be the first to enact tougher laws. It expects to vote on the package on
Monday, which expands New York’s ban on assault weapons, limits magazines to seven bullets, and
requires background checks for private gun sales.

– Massachusetts: Governor Deval Patrick will seek tougher gun restrictions this session, such as
limiting gun purchases to one per month and enhancing background screening.

– Maryland: Gov. Martin O’Malley plans “to propose limits on assault weapons and high- capacity
magazines, as well as tougher licensing requirements for handguns.”

– Illinois: There are proposals to ban assault weapons, after a similar measure died last year due
opposition from the NRA.

– Colorado: Gov. John Hickenlooper used his state address to call for background checks on private
gun sales, currently exempt through the “gunshow loophole.”

– Arizona: In the Republican-controlled Arizona legislature, Democrats unveiled a plan for universal
background checks.

– Delaware: Lawmakers are seeking background checks on private gun sales, a ban on assault
weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.

–Oregon: State Sen. Ginny Burdick (D) is backing bills that would ban or limit assault rifles and
and expand background checks.

– California: State Sen. Leland Yee (D) will reintroduce a bill from last year prohibiting gun
owners from outfitting semi-automatic weapons with devices that allow them to shoot more
rounds.

– Florida: Florida has a new bill introduced by the Democratic House minority that gives local
governments authority to ban concealed weapons from public events.

A new Pew Research poll finds "there are clear areas of agreement when it comes to a number of gun
policy proposals.
~ 85% of Americans favor making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks,
with comparable support from Republicans, Democrats and independents.
~ 80% support laws to prevent mentally ill people from purchasing guns, with broad support across party lines."

~ 67% favor creating a federal database to track gun sales,  Democrats (84%,Republicans (49%).
~ 55% favors a ban on assault-style weapons; Democrats 69%, Republicans 44%.
Similar divides exist to banning high-capacity ammunition clips or the sale of ammunition online."

85% of AMerican's answer 'off the cuff' to 'LIKE' what everyone else is liking on facebook and are too ignorant and
made to feel fearful by the rhetoric used by our, oh sooooo strong leaders, to investigate the full picture of their
own lives....

not to mention the background check thing and the mental health thing gives ALOT of a power to a few to be able
to input data on the many....AND GUESS WHAT.....it never ever ever gets expunged, even if unfounded...

at least in church there is expiation and forgiveness.....your government offers none.....

oooooo, oh my my my...I hope they do something about that big bully...I'm just a poor factory worker/waitress/garbage

The final New York gun control provisions expected to be passed tonight hit a dozen major aspects
including a much tighter assault weapon ban and restrictions on ammunition and sale of guns.

The provisions obtained by The Associated Press would create a mandatory police registry of assault
weapons under a more restrictive definition. All private sales would require a background check done
through a licensed dealer.
The law would also create a more powerful tool to require the reporting of
mentally ill people who say they intend to use a gun illegally.

"The Unforgiven"

New blood joins this earth
And quikly he's subdued
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules

With time the child draws in
This whipping boy done wrong
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own
That never from this day
His will they'll take away

What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be
Never see
Won't see what might have been

What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free
Never me
So I dub thee unforgiven

They dedicate their lives
To running all of his
He tries to please them all
This bitter man he is
Throughout his life the same
He's battled constantly
This fight he cannot win
A tired man they see no longer cares
The old man then prepares
To die regretfully
That old man here is me

What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be
Never see
Won't see what might have been

What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free
Never me
So I dub the unforgiven

You labeled me
I'll label you
So I dub the unforgiven

Please explain how this is going to prevent another 'Sandy Hook' or gun crimes in general?

At the present time, a criminal, an escaped felon, an escaped mental patient can go into a 'gun show' and
walk out with an AR15 with no background checks what so ever.
Hand him the gun... he hands you the cash... and walks away.
40% of sales that take place at 'gun shows' have no background checks.
Do you see a flaw in the present law???

It doesn't, this is a law against something that never was a problem to begin with. 99.9% of all background checks go through with no problem, we seen it here in NY where gunshows already must have background checks done. This will not stop private sales and there is no way to stop private sales, this is basically a law which they hope citizens will obey.

According to FBI statistics, well over 80% of perps in gun related crimes are NOT the legal owner of the weapon.
The Newtown killer stole his mothers guns, which were legally bought and she would have passed a background check. The Columbine killers got their guns from a friend through a 3rd party purchase at a gun show...This friend would have passed a background check.

The rules set in the new NYS law will only penalize the people that follow laws in the first place.
NYS has just created an instant black market for ar-15's and the like because most people that have them will not register them and then be held to the limits the law prescribes.
Criminals don't obey laws, that's why we call them criminals.

Under existing law, I could sell anyone a gun.  Give me the money, take the gun... in a private sale.
The reason that criminals, convicted felons,(or escaped felons) and mentally unstable people go to
gun shows IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY WOULD FLUNK A BACKGROUND CHECK IN A GUN STORE.
Henry points out that : 99.9% of all background checks go through with no problem,
Of course they do!  Why file a background check that you know you will fail... instead go to
a gun show or private sale and Felons walk away with AR15's.

Are you really that naive to think just because the state bans the private sale of Ar-15's and the like it just isn't going to happen anymore?
I know five people that have ar-15's that have no intention of registering them.. and if they sell them someday, they'll do it underground...
as long as there is a demand, there will be a market..either legal or not...Tax free cigarettes, fireworks, drugs, guns...there will be no difference

NY has background checks at gunshows already, arguing about a topic you know nothing about again, well whats new.

To date, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) has prevented
nearly 1.8 million criminals and other prohibited purchasers from buying guns.
The law
also has a deterrent effect—prohibited purchasers are less likely to try to buy guns when
they know comprehensive background check requirements are in place.

Unfortunately, current federal law requires criminal background checks only for guns sold through
licensed firearm dealers, which account for just 60% of all gun sales in the United States.
A loophole in the law allows individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell
guns without a license—and without processing any paperwork. That means that two out of
every five guns sold in the United States change hands without a background check.

Only six states (CA, CO, IL, NY, RI) require universal background checks on all firearm sales
at gun shows.  However private sales with out background checks IS LEGAL.  A buyer at a gun
show in these states, makes the sale with the buyer... walks to the parking lot with the gun
and the cash, then sells the gun to the Convicted Felon with NO BACKGROUND CHECK.

This law is about 'closing loopholes' that allow criminals to easily buy guns... Isn't that what all
of us want?
