When I heard of the plan, I asked the late U.S. Rep. Sam Stratton to throw my name in the volunteer hopper. Before I was in the news business, I had campaigned for Stratton when he won the Schenectady mayoral election in the early '50s.

"Are you kidding? You could get killed over there,'' was the exact reaction from Sam. I assured him I was loony but serious.
