Jack Welch ✔@jack_welch Unbelievable jobs numbers..these Chicago guys will do anything..can't debate so change numbers 5 Oct 12 ReplyRetweetFavorite Immediately following of a jobs report showing unemployment below 8 percent for the first time in four years, former General Electric CEO Jack Welch accused the White House of skewing the numbers to help President Obama win.

Yeah, but they are hiring 250 more... the majority are facilities/maintenance folks and they are outsourcing that.

This bank has swallowed up 'how many other banks'???? And now all of these banks are running on a shoe string! And sorry to say....they are NOT facilities/maintenance folks in the majority who got the pink slip.

Since the 7.8% unemployment figure is based on a survey of 60,000 households, it is safe to say that this survey (if conducted appropriately) would have a margin of error of plus or minus 3%. Which means that within the margin of error the unemployment rate (giving Obama the benefit of the doubt) could very well still be over 8%.
But the more telling figures are the actual percentage of people working and the job creation numbers. Those numbers tell a different story. The FACT is that we have NOT created enough new jobs to replace the jobs lost since the recession began and we know that the population of working age Americans is still growing. Common sense tells us that the REAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE is far above 7.8% or 8.1% -- probably as high as 14% or 15%.
Unfortunately, too many Americans will accept the smoke and mirrors numbers that this administration and, in fairness, every previous administration chooses to post. Most people just don't have the time to actually sift through the data and look for the REAL TRUTH.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics isn't currently run by a political appointee. For most of Obama’s term, the commissioner was a holdover appointed by President Bush. The current acting commissioner John Gavin is a career BLS economist, not an Obama appointee.
The underlying data behind the BLS reports is also publicly released and used by analysts across the private sector and academia, meaning a conspiracy would have to survive scrutiny from trained economists of all political stripes.

“I worked for Secretary Hilda Solis and she didn’t know the job numbers until 8 a.m. on the day,” Stevenson said. “Which made my job very difficult, because I had to help her figure out what she was going to say when they were released.” The BLS releases the numbers publicly at 8:30 a.m. ET.

My mistake, only 30 are from maintenance, however, the Net gain is 70 jobs. There are plenty of other companies that are net-lossing jobs, this isn't one of them.

Your response proves nothing. Every administration (Democrat and Republican) in my lifetime has changed the way various bits of economic data are calculated and reported. The unemployment rate has notoriously underestimated the REAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE for decades. And the fact is that Presidents of BOTH parties have benefited from this underestimating of the REAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, The simple fact is that any incumbent president (Democrat or Republican) would prefer that the American people NOT know the REAL STATE/CONDITION OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.
If you believe otherwise - you are either too immature to know better or a fool.

In an appearance on CNBC, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis called Welch's comments "ludicrous."
"BLS is not manipulating data. Evidence of such would be a scandal of enormous proportions & loss of credibility," Tony Fratto, former deputy press secretary to President George W. Bush, wrote on Twitter.
Steve Haugen, an economist at the BLS who has been involved in the process of analyzing jobs data for nearly 30 years, flatly dismissed the idea that there was any way the White House or Obama campaign could have had a hand in how the numbers turned out.
"The data are not manipulated for political reasons. I've been involved in the process myself for almost three decades. There's never been any political manipulation of the data, period," Haugen told CBSNews.com.
Neutron Jack accomplished his mission. His tweet, with no facts to back up his opinion, will start a series of "news reports" and plant doubt in naive conservatives across the country. Those easily swayed will believe it as if it were a proven fact.

Let's face it, they don't need to manipulate it, the report is bullshit anyway. It only surveys 60,000 households, which makes up a very small percentage of the unemployed, and 141,000 businesses. It does not count people who have stopped looking due a number of reasons, including despair, and the underemployed. We added 141,000 jobs, but yet we have weekly first time unemployment claims consistently average 350,000 plus and the rate goes down .3%??...There's some funny math going on and has been for a long time...not just in this administration.

The FACT is that we have NOT created enough new jobs t
Wait! You endorse your local dems who claim they created 5,000 new jobs in Schenctady alone? The city is in a renaissance, everything is wonderful. Of course you won't provide ANY EVIDENCE to support your claim of the fact.
And obviously, an adult who is not of retirement age, not holding a job, not living as a NORMAL adult male should be living, you've been unemployed for well over 99 weeks (wasn't that the max benefits allowed to be collected when the socialist president increased it).
When are you going to get a job?
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

I agree with you. Most Americans don't really understand where/how the Federal government gets that unemployment number. It is is -- as you correctly pointed out only a survey.
Another Federal government number that is rather bogus is the monthly inflation report. Most Americans don't realize that the price they pay for gas for their cars, the price they pay to heat, cool and light their homes, medicine and health care costs, and the cost of rent/mortgages are not included in the "grocery basket" that the Feds check each month. So basically, the Feds have ignored the cost of about 40% to 60 % of what Americans pay for each month -- so how can the inflation number be anywhere near accurate ????????????????
