Stereotypes are most often incorrect or based on prejudice but in a recent poll Alabama and Mississippi live up to their reputation. The results of the survey reinforce every stereotype about the sophistication, intelligence and prejudices of many conservative southerners in general.

~76% identify as Republican; 3% as Democrats and 11% as independents ~60% Do not believe in evolution ~68% Describe themselves as Evangelical Christians ~53% Have a favorable opinion of Rush Limbaugh; 33% do not ~21% Believe that inter-racial marriage should be illegal

Who did the survey? How can you jump from a survey about people in Alabama and Mississippi to make a broad statement about Southern Conservatives as a whole ?
I have traveled through the South and know a good number of people who were born, raised and live in the South. My experience has been that the "redneck stereotype" does not apply to most Southerns just the same as stereotypes about New Yorkers or "Yankees" etc. don't really apply.
In terms of levels of sophistication, intelligence and prejudice -- I don't believe any area/region of the country is far and away superior than any other region nor that any area/region of the country is devoid of the problem of prejudice, ignorance or lack of sophistication. (BTW - of the three - "sophistication" seems to me to be the most subjective and least relevant/important ... how are you measuring sophistication? What determines sophistication? choice of music? hobbies? clothes? etc ??? and who sets the standard? and is it necessary or relevant to make such judgements?)

I agree! Not to mention that tons of folks in the south are transits from all over the country so this is nothing but another useless, irresponsible moot point! Trying to divide is what the liberal crazed nut jobs do best when they have played all of their cards!

One thing I have noticed - I have 2 aunts and with them assorted cousins by marriage -- one on my mother's side and one on my father's side who live in the South. Now, I don't want to make any broad statements or assumptions --- but the one who was born,raised and lived in the south (Mississippi) LEAST fits the stereotype and the one who was born and raised in the north and only moved down south 30 years ago is probably closer to the "redneck stereotype". I have noticed similarly with my friends down south ---- the funniest example is a good friend from childhood who lives in Louisiana now and is seemingly awaiting the resurrection of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis.

My friends and family who have relocated to the south......have done so in part for work, but say they are enjoying the side benefits of lower taxes, friendlier folks AND folks that appear to be more patriotic and proud. Their words....'they ain't new yorkers''

I have an aunt who moved from Florida to the North Carolina/Georgia border area. A very pretty place to live but she always said that half the natives there were very nice people... the other half were complete a$$holes.
She was surprised to see the KKK in robes, standing with signs on the corner of a busy main street one day... when she asked about it, people told her to just look the other way and ignore it... and said it was a good idea not to discuss it.
When my mom visited my aunt, she struck up a conversation with a neighbor and mentioned that they had stopped for breakfast on the way home from church. The neighbor asked "what church"... My mom said the name of the Catholic church. The neighbor shook her head, and said... Oh... Well I won't hold it against ya... and walked away. My aunt said that was typical behavior. Obviously you haven't spent time in the REAL south. The South eastern coast and gulf coast is home to a number of military bases, and with it, retirees from many areas. There's people that flock to these states from all over to take advantage of low tax rates, large pieces of property and an easier, less stressful way of life.
It's more a "melting pot" today - not like it was 50 years ago.
True Story: Thirty years ago, I flew to Raleigh Durham. I had to get a bus from Raleigh to Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro NC for a temporary duty assignment. I got off the bus, 3 days prior to my billeting, and decided I'd walk to the hotel. When I stepped out of the bus station (which was no bigger than todays little super in Rotterdam), it was a short walk (maybe a mile - I was younger then) through the neighborhood to the motel outside the base (EconoLodge if I remember correctly). As I passed a corner house, there were 2 or 3 colored/black children playing on the front lawn, nearly naked. I remember distinctly, the little girl running to the door of the house and yelling "Mommy Mommy - it's a honkey". Yep, I was a honkey in a colored mans town. Today, the house I ended up buying while I was there, is still standing, though it's gone through I'm sure many different owners. The "downtown", which was a basic ghost town, is now a bustling avenue with dozens of shops, a full grocery store, parking, flowers and kind people. It's SO much more than the renaissance downtown Schenectady has claimed, you'd be surprised. I was there 2 years ago for a visit, it's absolutely incredible the transformation. And, I didn't see one front lawn with a pickup truck on blocks, old appliances out front, not even a crapper for a mailbox.
There's many towns and counties in the south (notably Alabama and Mississippi) that have gone through similar transitions.
The stereotype you're offering is flawed, based on real life.
Yes, I'm sure there are areas that fit the stereotype, but it's really far and few between. Visit sometime, take a drive through, you'll be surprised at what you see. Many of the homes out compete anything in upstate NY. And the people are SO much nicer.
Obviously you haven't spent time in the REAL south? LOL! I've spent more time in the south than I'd care to. Much of the South is rather progressive. Atlanta is a big city, with Big City Traffic, much like any other. Savannah is a great town for a vacation. St Augustine is nice, so is Wilmington, Charlotte etc... and they are now a mix of transplants and natives much as any other part of the country.
The poll was taken as polls are done through out the country. If taken in NY... I doubt that only14% of New Yorkers would think that Obama is a Christian... but in Mississippi and Alabama that is their thought. I doubt that 60% of New Yorkers don't believe in Evolution... And as racist as some New Yorkers are, I doubt that 21% believe that inter-racial marriage should be illegal.
Much of the rural south and apparently much of Mississippi and Alabama still cling to their Redneck heritage.
