Why didn't we get a warning from the governor the last time we were under a tornado watch/warning? The national weather service handles severe weather notifications the governor declares states of emergencies when it happens.
Read VERY CAREFULLY --- the National Weather Service's storm prediction center notified the Governor and the public yesterday that conditions were ripe for VERY DANGEROUS STORMS -- not just typical summer thunderstorms -- but the type of storms that produce tornadoes and damaging straight line winds. They recommended that the Governor and the state prepare to respond to significant damaging storms.
The FACT is that a tornado did hit Elmira and there was the possibility of another in Orange County. And last I checked Elmira in Chemung County and Orange County were still in the State of New York. Oh -- and there has been some other damage and power outages in the Catskills and other parts of the state.
So the Governor - who is Governor of ALL the state and not just your backyard - was absolutely correct in having the state emergency center on alert and in making all of the other preparations to respond to these storms WHICH DID IN FACT CAUSE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE IN PARTS OF THE STATE.

This was NOT a normal summer thunderstorm system. It was NOT fear mongering. The storm system was different from the normal line of storms that go through New York in July. The FACT is that the storm produced at least one tornado (Elmira) and at several times during the day produced storms with rotation (including one just south of the City of Saratoga) that were capable of producing tornadoes. The worst of the weather occurred in the Southern Tier, Southern Catskill s and Lower Hudson Valley and in New York City --- in New York City one man was killed due to the storms. And for the record all of those areas are IN NEW YORK STATE, And also for the record, the governors of Pennsylvania and Connecticut were also contacted and took similar precautions as Governor Cuomo --- activating the state emergency management center, pre-positioning rescue and clean-up resources and issuing warning to the general public.

My comprehension is fine lumpy...Disagreeing with you about the proper use of the governor’s office to spread fear 24 hours prior to a thunderstorm isn't a comprehension problem. Not only was the warning unnecessary fear mongering, the pre-positioning of rescue and clean-up resources was a waste of money.
BTW, it is not a FACT, the report was one POSSIBLE tornado.
People do not need to be conditioned to believe that the state government can protect you from being terrorized by weather.

I keep reading the word "FEAR" in this thread. For me, if the warning came from the Gov or from the Nat Weather Service makes little difference. "FEAR" isn't involved.
A weather advisory is just that... it's INFORMATION. Information to be used to plan your day or to take precautions if the conditions warrant. It's much the way I view a traffic advisory to avoid construction delays or an accident. I don't think that anyone is selling fear... just information.

Geez, if that's the case, then the fact that these apocalyptic storms crossed state lines, this warning should have come from the President of the United States. These storms were in federal jurisdiction. Kind of like Arizona's immigration laws, the states don't have the right to issue interstate weather warnings.

Well, at the end of the day, hopefully the governor learned his lesson to not predict weather and alarm New Yorkers from the governors office. He would be smart to leave it to the NWS, because when the predictions are wrong, they get the blame. The NWS made Cuomo look silly.
