NYC says gay marriage has $259M impact in a year Associated Press – 16 hours ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Officials estimate gay marriage has had an economic impact of $259 million on New York City in the past year. The figure was issued Tuesday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. One year ago, New York became the largest state to legalize gay marriage. Officials say at least 8,200 same sex marriage licenses have been issued. That accounts for more than 10 percent of the 75,000 marriage licenses issued in the city since July 24, 2011....................>>>>...............>>>>............http://finance.yahoo.com/news/nyc-says-gay-marriage-259m-impact-194759004--finance.html
Really, 10% of the 75,000 wedding spends $259 million?
That's $35,000 per wedding.
Gay people must party hard.
If they have the reception in a NYC hotel that is union controlled, $35,000 is cheap.

Also, that's the wedding, reception, hotels for all the people coming, all the money that they're going to spend while they're around. You know, the same type of number bull that they feed us when the Proctor-ologists downtown have a show and "stimulate" our economy. I think we've been stimulated enough by Proctors, and this is just another type of the same. If it was natural and a good thing, they wouldn't be turning around and trying to PROVE how good it's been for us.
UCLA Study Assesses Economic Impact of Gay Marriage May 17, 2009
The UCLA study found that the over 12,000 same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts since 2004 have pumped over $111 million into the state's economy.
The report from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law says a typical same-sex couple spent about $7,400 on their wedding, with one in ten couples spending over $20,000. A second study by the same group found that young, highly educated people in same-sex relationships were 2.5 times more likely to move to Massachusetts after 2004 than before gay marriage became legal.
The UCLA study by Professors Brad Sears and M.V. Badgett of the Williams Institute also found that spending "by resident same-sex couples on their weddings, and by out-of-state couples on tourism and their weddings, will boost California's economy by over $683.6 million in direct spending over the next three years." Furthermore, the direct spending by resident and out-of-state same-sex couples is enough to create and sustain over 2,178 new jobs in California. And their conservative estimate is that gay marriage will generate over $55.1 million in state and local sales tax revenues and transient occupancy tax revenues.

The economic impact of out of state residence coming to a 'gay marriage state' would probably include not just the money spent by the marrying couple, but also the added impact of guests, also coming to the state and the money they spend on gifts, travel, hotel and restaurants while they are there.

Gee, sort of like I just said... Thanks for the added enlightenment.
So you agree with the premise when it's about the economic impact of Gay Marriage, but deny it works when it's about the economic impact of Proctors.

I hope they stay in the state and spend their money on a good ole NYS matrimonial attorney when the time comes. If they are like heterosexual marriages, its around 50%. Gay marriage along the with the new no fault divorce statute will keep my wife's firm in business forever.

No, because in Schenectady, we have so many bigger issues, and the fact is that the economic impact side of gay marriage doesn't cost more than the amount that it brings in. To figure this, you would have to know exactly how much money was brought in by the shows as far as additional money (sales tax revenue and hotel taxes, etc.). Then, you would have to compare that to how much was spent ON the project. How much was spent, and will be spent, continuously, on the bringing in of gays for marriage? Well, recent years show the total amount given as a handout to Proctors as $200,000 per year. Now, if you can show me that there has been additional income for the taxpayers of more than $200,000, maybe I'll consider, but the fact of the matter is, there is no way to prove how much is coming in. Plus, many of the people that go to Proctors for things are local people, meaning they're just coming in for the show and leaving, heading home, not spending additional money in town.
How the hell does gay marriage boost the economy? How does any marriage boost the economy? A marriage has no productive output. People either spent their savings or went into debt to pay for it. It may help local economies, but there is no increase in national GDP. It's probably net nuetral.
Same thing with Proctors, the residents fund it in HOPES of attracting money from the productive surrounding areas. I would say Proctors is a net negative on the local economy.
Ciero the legal document itself does nothing, it's the ceremony, party, dress, suits, food, liquor, limo and on and on. To my conservative friends you should take this as another sign that the less restrictions placed on us by our government, the better the economy will be. This is NYS government (for once) using capitalism to it's advantage.
Funny how folks will sell their souls for a buck!!!!!

I have no problem with gay wedding ceremonies and receptions, just don't mislead people telling them that it has economic value. It is just more consumption. Throwing parties isn't an economic "boost". The gay couple isn't anymore productive because they are married.
