I KNOW UP CLOSE AND VERY PERSONAL ABOUT HOSPICE.....
I'm in it EVERY DAY I GO TO WORK....and I'm not in the hospice organization...... every day I go to work someone is dying....day in and day out........WITH OR WITHOUT hospice.... I've been at the bedside of probably 30-40 folks holding their hand when they stop breathing or when they say their last word...or when they talk about their life....or when they want their mouth wet...or when they want to roll over or when they want pain medication.... believe you me....I KNOW...I smell death every day
This is your response to a post on Hospice...
"because you can't just die....we hire 'wailers' for the family"
If all you see in Hospice is "wailers" then you don't get it. Wailers??? I know a lot of people who see Hospice as a very needed, and valuable services... None consider them "Hired Wailers".

no,,,,that's NOT how I see them...but an 'agency' paid to 'assist in death'(and I don't mean physically killing) is absurd...an MD (your MD or my MD) is just as qualified to assist in COMFORT..... it's something we ALL go through no matter the age/disease/complication....
the problem is the government VALIDATION that we DON'T NEED/WANT.....it's part of human existence...
it's an INALIENABLE RIGHT....not some bureaucratic machine that needs some ICD9 code......
disease sucks/dying sucks...but all happen just the same regardless of some government health 'care'.......

How I'm reading this.....and I could be wrong here.......senders is saying that hospice is an unnecessary layer! Doctors and nurses are more than qualified to treat folks who are at the end of the life cycle as we know it. Unnecessary both medically and monetarily!!
Life and death and disease is normal! And doctors and nurses have been dealing with it for centuries....that is what they are have been educated and trained to deal with. that is their job. So why is there another added expensive layer called 'hospice' when the service already exists???
Hospice is suppose to be about palliative care.......that is already the practice in nursing homes.......so why is hospice in the nursing homes?

I think what senders might be trying to say is, families can do the same thing as Hospice. The process of death doesn't need to be institutionalized. If families didn't fear government interference and drug laws, family members could administer the opiates to their dying loved-ones without worrying about the DEA tossing a flash bang through the window and the barrel of an M6 in your chest.
We've been told the 'regular folk' just can't be trusted with such job.

correct...and palliative care(as defined by whom?) can be done anywhere....it's an INALIENABLE RIGHT....
unfortunately suffering is as part of human existence as breathing

TRUTH....drug dealers sell drugs to folks who think the world sucks(or whatever) and those folks feel they are dying....
subjective of course.
death isn't just physical

I disagree. I know from experience that family members will not provide the amount of service that hospice will.
Family members will offer to send a check or other nonsense claiming they have jobs and obligations.
They won't put in the weeks and often months of caring for someone at home as they approach death.
I have seen it. Hospice provides a comfortable, compassionate end for most of their clients.
I recommend hospice care over selfish family care any day.
I don't want any of my loved ones taking care of me as I die.
It is horrible and very depressing.
I have tried myself to do it, but in the end, no family members were as hard working and compassionate as any of the family members.

sure, hospice can provide 'dying care' farmers the fruits and veggies ranchers the meats sanitation the sewers etc etc.....
but the care a family provides, although not 'enough' maybe in the systems eyes actually IS enough....dying/disease and such SUCK...but don't let anyone tell you your value as a caregiver can be usurped by an organized government entity....or any other entity that advertises 'we do it for you, so you can have a piece of mind'..... that's like saying I'll study so you can take the test....
there is a place for hospice.....just as long as it doesn't remove the self.....

Hospice lobbyists battle over Medicare payment system By Kelly Kennedy, USA TODAYUpdated 8/15/2011 10:34
WASHINGTON — For-profit hospice organizations have spent more than $1million this year lobbying to prevent Medicare from reducing payments to try to curb the soaring cost of hospice care.
Sen. Ron Wyden, shown here speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill, is pushing a bill that would require the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to test a new payment system for two years.
The nation's two largest for-profit hospice companies, Vitas and Gentiva, have together spent $1,188,100 on lobbying this year, records show. Their top priority is a bill by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., that would require the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which runs the Medicare program, to test a new payment system for two years. That program wouldn't start until October 2013, the bill states, which would delay any changes in payments for at least four years.
In the first half of 2011, Vitas paid $390,000 to Washington lobbyists, according to lobbying reports. The company receives 90% of its revenue from Medicare and Medicaid, according to its filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The document shows they are lobbying because "Medicare and Medicaid programs are increasing pressure to control health care costs and to decrease or limit increases in reimbursement rates."
Gentiva spent $798,100 in the same time period on lobbying, saying Wyden's bill is its top legislative priority.
