I'm waiting for the response from DV claiming the cop was there for "crowd" control, or he's legitimately on his lunch.   Sure on lunch, but do like the rest of us workers, we pay our own transportation costs to go to lunch and  we cannot afford to pay the transportation costs of cops to go to lunch too.

TAKE THIS TO CHANNEL 6 !!!

Just for the record, the middle of the Western Gateway Bridge is actually Rotterdam. I suppose the island underneath must be Rotterdam as well. Rotterdam police commonly respond to accidents on the bridge. Stopping to eat at the end of the bridge isn't really that outrageous.

Yes, the islands in the Mohawk, part of the bridge and part of the SCCC parking lot and athletic fields (along with a a stretch of I-890 between GE and the river) are in the Town of Rotterdam.

Hopefully, the predicted weekend rains will offer a bit of relief for the lawns and soon the ban will be lifted.

I have noticed that those lawns which are  "scalped" or cut too short seem to be in the worst shape.  We have always cut our lawns on the highest setting (along with letting it grow a bit before the first mowing in the spring to let the root system grow and some other common sense practices).  We also have nice large shade trees that help retain water in the soil and keep the harsh sun from beating down on our lawn.

Personally, I have to chuckle at the "outrage" over not being able to water a lawn for a couple weeks.  The primary reason that we have a town water system is to bring a reliable and safe supply of water for drinking, flushing toilets, bathing and various household chores (dish-washing and laundry) -- and to provide water to help out out a fire if needed.
I don't believe it is the town's responsibility or the rest of the taxpayers' responsibility to ensure that every house have a lawn that is as pristine and green as Augusta National Golf Course.  In fact, I think we could save a lot of money if those folks who insist on having such lawns and insist on pumping so much of OUR water on those lawns were required to pay for every gallon of water used for purposes other than the primary purposes stated previously.   Why should my tax dollars be spent to keep up their lawns?
Many of these same folks who are crying and ranting about their lawns are the ones who were dead set against spending any town tax dollars on public safety -- two examples - the desperately needed new police station and Rotterdam EMS.   So since they all felt a private for-profit ambulance service was better than a publicly financed one, we should make them buy the water for their lawns from a private water company which could truck it in to those who choose to pay for it.

Well, obviously you aren't a homeowner interested in selling his home and getting the best price.

Many people are waiting for housing prices to come back up, and will then flee from Schenectady County.

Well, I am a property owner and that has NOTHING to do with the topic.

The fact is that certain folks who post here are upset if taxpayer money is spent on something THEY don't want and yet they want all the free municipal water (delivered through a taxpayer funded water system) they can get for their own lawns.   Those same folks were screaming bloody murder because other taxpayers in town wanted a municipally funded EMS service.   So basically, these folks (whom I call nayboobs) are just self-centered and only want tax money spent on their wants and needs --- they (nayboobs) couldn't care less about the wants and needs of other taxpayers.

Oh -- and if you were a true libertarian - wouldn't you just drill your own well instead of relying on the government for your water supply?

Um, maybe, if I didn't already pay the damn town for water service.

Stop with the "we" have trees, etc.    You do not have trees.   The proper wording when you post is to say "My two aunties' property has trees....."     You don't NOT have any ownership in that house/property.   What is might be a handshake between people/relatives does NOT constitute ownership.

Again, it is NOT your tax dollars.   You do NOT pay property taxes, any "donation" you might give does NOT make you a taxpayer,  ONLY the OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT RECORDS specify who is a taxpayer and your name is NOT on the deed, not even as an LE and there is no trust either.   You cannot even claim the state "real property tax credit" as a renter!   SO therefore, these things all PROVE that you do NOT pay taxes!   Just like YOU cannot vote in elections/propositions that limit voting to homeowners/taxpayers

And, DV, for your information, nice lawns add to the value of our homes, while being forced to pay for a government ambulance company (when an when an excellent private sector company exists) just increases our taxes and high taxes decrease the value of homes---I guess you still do not grasp how the high taxes in the city have caused the home values to plummet, but then, since you are NOT a taxpayer we would not expect you to understand that high taxes results in lower property values.   A MODEST police station is all that is needed, nothing lavish, they COULD fix up that old shopping plaza on Curry Rd and it would be more than sufficient.

Look now DV thinks he's Peter Bowden, since he is a couch potato child without a job to support himself he has plenty of time to watch TV and repeat what they say

The watering ban applies to watering of lawns.  It does not apply to watering by hose (not by sprinkler) your vegetable gardens or flower beds.  And, you can always water with watering can.

Really DV????

What did someone say about the police coming around when they were watering by hose?   Huh????    DO you want to address that?

What did the newspaper report for someone who wanted to water the kids by hose for a few minutes?    Huh?

Can't speak to the facts, huh?

I don't think the outrage is over not being able to water per se.  The outrage is at the chuckle head politicians that "scalped" the water district budget, or cut it too short, in order to pay for the bloated town employee salaries and bennies.  It is once again just another example of the pigs that run the finances of this town screwing the homeowners in order to line the pockets of the politically important town employee.

Give me my water district taxes back and I'll have a well dug in by back yard.  Why would I have water delivered by a private water company when it is under my feet?  I will maintain my own pump, since the town can't manage to do so.

It is a good thing we don't have town wide sewers.  The morons that end up getting elected would have to decide whether to gut the water districts or sewer districts in order to make the towns contribution to the police pension fund.

If I knew how mismanaged this town was and how incompetent and corrupt those that involve themselves in politics were, I would have bought a house with as few public services as possible.

I agree - funds shouldn't be transferred from the water district to balance the budget.  I don't agree with your characterization of our town leaders but then you are entitled to your own opinion.

However, I am raising another issue -- that is -- what services are actually necessary and essential.  Reliable and safe water for drinking, cooking, bathing and household chores is necessary and essential  (IMHO).  Is water for watering plants and gardens and lawns essential and necessary or a luxury?  Should the town consider a metered watering system - allowing for a reasonable amount of "free water" for necessary and essential uses" and charging for usage above that amount?

Similar questions can and should be asked about every line item in the town's budget.  Is it necessary and essential  or is it just a luxury or something we aren't mandated to provide but choose to provide?

A year ago, I raised the issue that while state law requires all towns to have a Town Clerk - it does not require a town of our size to have a separate Receiver of Taxes.   In towns without a separate Receiver of Taxes, the Town Clerk's office handles the functions and duties of receiving taxes.  Rotterdam has the opportunity in 2013 (between January 1 and sometime at the end of April) to take the necessary action to do away with the separate office (effective at the end of the current occupant's term) and realize a savings of at least $50,000.

I am just raising questions to spur discussion on legal, realistic ways to reduce the cost of town government.  We should at least discuss the options rather than pretend that these options don't exist.
