SCHENECTADY — The Democratic Party's 18th try to unseat state Sen. Republican Hugh Farley is taking on a dramatically different tone from two years ago, when well-known county politician and legislature chairwoman Susan Savage suffered a significant loss to the longtime senator.
This time around, the candidate facing Farley is unknown to the public, a Democratic loyalist who has worked behind the scenes to bring that party to power in Schenectady County over the last 10 years.
Madelyn Thorne, the wife of Schenectady City Clerk Chuck Thorne and director of pastoral care at Glendale Home, said she was asked by party faithful to run for the new 49th Senate District, but also "I had been playing around with the idea that maybe it's time to go out and start doing the work myself," she said at a campaign kickoff held outside Proctors Theatre on Sunday.
So, between her and her hubby, there's a lavish $100,000 combined taxpayer funded salaries, add to it lavish insurance, pensions, etc and it's probably more like $160,000 . Wait, the hubby probably just got a hefty raise.
Will she become a double dipper?
Oh, let's figure $100,000 (legislator salary if raise goes into effect) plus whatever lulus/extras for "committee" assignments (remember Greg Floyd reported that virtually each and every legislator gets pay for SOME committee assignment.
So perhaps $100,000 plus maybe $15,000 for a lulu plus a $50,000 county salary and she'll get her highest three years to figure a pension. Wow, what will it be, about 70% of $165,000 ???
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
Does anybody go on this board who isn't a Republican? Or isn't a Conservative? Or isn't just........
I thought it was required to join the board! Registered Democrat here... but I have voted for the occasional Independent and Republican.
