The movie THE PATRIOT comes close to the essence of what a patriot was like in '1776'. Overly dramatized to be sure.
The farmer or small business person who stood up to the British. This person may have survived the revolution & prospered but then he may not have. The patriot most probably was overwhelmed, cold & alone yet brave enough to do the right ting at the right moment.
General Washington was a good man but think of the little souls who's names we will never know. Only the product of their deed.
This could not occur in America today, we are not a lean people, we are Nation of fat slobs dulled down by electronic media, rich food & all sort of wonderful nothingness.
Revolution is all but a distant memory. Revolution is a dirty word. In Syria a brutal regime slaughters it's own to preserve its tyranny. In America we use kinder & gentler methods. TSA, Homeland Security, surveillance of every sort, have no doubt, if the privileged elite, not the rich 1% but those who rule in Washington feel threaten the iron fist will come out.
A new elite has risen in America, they are not the poor nor the affulent but a government of self styled King Georges.
I am not calling for acts of singular bravery, you might lose your pension. Nor am I condoning violence, another excuse by the 1% to suppress patriotic instincts. Violence is the tool of those who have power. Violence in the hands of the oppressed is not law biding, it makes one a terrorist. Gandhi understood this.
Adopt a life style that puts aside the the toys, food, activity that conditions you to accept the status quo. Do not feed the monster, starve the monster.
Time to be a patriot, any takers?
Better to be silent, that way you get all those entitlements you richly deserve. Entitlements that bind you as surly as "taxation without representation".
Happy Independence Day you lazy slobs.
