ALBANY -— Temperatures have climbed above 90 degrees in Albany and will crack 95 degrees later this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
At 2 p.m., the high at Albany International Airport was 91 degrees. Factoring in the humidity, the air currently feels like it is around 100 degrees, said Hugh Johnson, a meteorologist with the weather service. The heat index could rise as high as 103 degrees later this afternoon, Johnson said. Temperatures are expected to peak at 4 p.m.
Wednesday marks the first time this month Albany has reached the 90s. The day's high should easily surpass the previous hottest day of this year, when the mercury rose to 91 degrees on May 29, Johnson said.
The weather service has issued a heat advisory for the Capital Region until 8 p.m. Johnson explained that the advisory is issued when the heat index is between 100 and 104 degrees. The advisory warns people, especially seniors, to properly hydrate, avoid strenuous activity and stay cool.
If the heat index were to rise above 105, Johnson said a excessive heat warning would be in effect that would urge people to stay indoors if possible.
The oppressive heat is being caused by a high pressure system that moved in from the west and is currently anchored over the Capital Region, Johnson said. A cold front will push that system out toward the Atlantic Coast Friday afternoon. Overnight lows Wednesday will drop to the low 70s. The high Thursday will be in the mid-to-high 90s as well, Johnson said.
Relief will come gradually, with temperatures dropping to the high to mid 80s on Friday and then into the lower 80s Saturday and Sunday, Johnson said.
"It will be a slow cool down," he said. "There is still some warm air behind the cold front."
Despite the hot, humid air, there were not many reports of people suffering health problems due to the weather.
At Shaker Ridge Country Club, one 61-year-old golfer fell to the ground after becoming overly hot, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said.
"He fell down, said his skin was feeling hot and clammy," the sheriff said. The man's condition was not considered serious, he said.
As weather bears down on the region, Albany officials opened the spray pads at Lincoln Park pool on Wednesday.
The pool will open on Thursday.
Albany County sent out a list of libraries that they suggest can be used as cooling stations if needed. The list includes: Albany, Altamont, Berne, Bethlehem, Cohoes, Colonie, Guilderland, Menands, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, Rensselaerville, Voorheesville, Watervliet and Westerlo public libraries.

we need governmental intervention and help. We need the government to save us from the heat.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Hush - it's a great reason for copious amounts of ice cold beers!
Back in the old day's sonny we never needed a reason for copious amounts of ice cold beers, as long as it was noon somewhere we were good to go............................in 1982 we attended the Bershire Mountains Bluegrass festival being held just outside of Cooperstown...............we would set a little money aside from each gig so we could buy "supplies" for the fest...............our supplies consisted of 34 cases of beer, a case of Baileys, a case of Amaretto, and a case of Wild Turkey for the 4 of us.............I brought an additional 4 cases of Heineken and assorted other "goodies" for my own consumption...........we left for that weekend at 4am from the El Gatto where we'd been throwin' 'em down since about 6 the previous evening..................we were told we had a good time, and I seem to remember it being that way................just the way things were back in the day.....................I stopped drinkin' for "sport" in 1999.............a cocktail at Christmas is all I allow myself anymore............

That guy was too warm while playing golf? Go find a guy pouring a hot tar roof today, and ask for his sympathy.
Coincidentally, the guy was golfing at Shaker Ridge, the same place I caddied when I was a kid, on days quite like this. Try carrying 2 bags, filled with every golf item you've ever owned, 18 holes in this crap. Do it twice, walk to Central Ave, get on the bus to Schenectady and then come cry to me about it.
