Last year, we ended up buying a '96 Volvo 850 (Turbo).
Fantasic car. The Inline 5 turbo (222hp) provides excellent power along with the various settings for the transmission (it's an automatic). The stock 8 speaker radio is actually REALLY good. Sunroof, power everything, heated seats, blah blah blah.
A $32k car 'brand new'...Less than $3k now
Personally, I've never owned a Euro car. My very first car was a '78 Chevy Monte Carlo (305ci engine), every car after was either a Ford Mustang (best one was a '84½ SVO Mustang) or a F-150 Truck.
Now, why do I bring this up?
Because I didn't realize that this little inline 5, 2.3L engine is damn near 'bulletproof'...'Bolt on' (Stage 3) kits are only around $1500 and will get you to around 310hp...More modified engines can get you over 500hp and thats only a few thousand more.
Check this out...I want my 850 to do this...Listen to the turbo spool up at the :30 sec mark
I wanna make $50k sport cars cry for under $15k
