Why stop at soda?

Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces could also include massive buckets of buttery movie-theater popcorn, as far as members of his Board of Health are concerned.

“The popcorn isn’t a whole lot better than the soda,” said Bruce Vladeck, a senior adviser at Nexera Consulting and one of the mayor’s appointees to the 11-member board.

The board yesterday agreed to put Bloomberg’s big-soda ban up for a public hearing July 24, but also talked about the merits of limiting other high-calorie treats.

A large tub of movie-theater popcorn has up to 1,650 calories.

“There are certainly milkshakes and milk-coffee beverages that have monstrous amounts of calories . . . and I’m not so sure what the rationale is not to include those,” said member Dr. Joel Forman, a pediatrics professor at Mount Sinai....................>>>>.................>>>>................Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/city_health_weasels_go_pop_wILeWUatbVzPN9x28huxjK#ixzz1xfsZMYgu

The board hand-picked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg that must approve his ban of selling large sugar-filled drinks at restaurants might be looking at other targets.

The New York City Board of Health showed support for limiting sizes of sugary drinks at a Tuesday meeting in Queens.  They agreed to start the process to formalize the large-drink ban by agreeing to start a six-week public comment period.

At the meeting, some of the members of board said they should be considering other limits on high-calorie foods.

One member, Bruce Vladeck, thinks limiting the sizes for movie theater popcorn should be considered.

"The popcorn isn't a whole lot better than the soda," Vladeck said.

Another board member thinks milk drinks should fall under the size limits.

"There are certainly milkshakes and milk-coffee beverages that have monstrous amounts of calories," said board member Dr. Joel Forman.

Mayor Bloomberg says the drink rules are an attempt to fight obesity in the city.  It would limit food service establishments in the city from serving drinks bigger than 16 ounces but would allow refills.

The New York City Restaurant Association is fighting the proposal and is considering legal action of it goes into effect.

New York City voters oppose 51 - 46 percent Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed ban on the sale of over-sized sugary soft drinks, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

First of all, it's the butter and the salt that are piled on the popcorn that makes it unhealthy.  Without these additions, it is a VERY healthy snack.

As far as the large sugary drinks, does this include only things that are packaged, i.e. sodas, etc.?  Or would it include things such as the bathtub-sized margaritas that are served at some establishments?  I mean that would be a sugary drink, too, right?  All the natural sugars in fruit?

Using tat logic, all colored alcohol drinks would be banned as well - rums, etc.  They're all loaded with sugar, but you don't see Bumblberg trying to ban those either.  Go figure.

First, I sincerely doubt that butter exists in movie theater popcorn.

It's more than likely that it contains FD&C Yellow # 5 and #6, along with some mono sodium glutamate enhanced vegetable oil.

2nd, just ban theaters, or at least ban the escalators and elevators, thereby decreasing the stupid food to exercise ratio.

Obviously, anything that a theater sells is the problem.

Well, I take that back.

The Albany theater on Madison Ave or Delaware Ave had all kinds of hippy health foods last time I went.

Damn, that's gotta make the movies suck, making you eat healthy.
