A walk through the Train to Nowhere Posted on May 31, 2012 at 6:14 pm by Rick Karlin
Check Friday’s TU for more details on this: the Cuomo Administration’s State Operations Director Howard Glaser took reporters on a field trip to Glenville earlier Thursday to show us the Trains to Nowhere — remnants of a failed effort more than a decade ago to upgrade some Amtrak trains.
It turned out to be a stunning case of missteps: the turbine engines were not practical and could catch fire, the tracks were never upgraded and Amtrak never bought into the whole concept.
As a result, these trains have sat, rusting and idle, in this field for years. Now the Cuomo folks want to sell them, conceding they’ll probably be turned into scrap metal.
Cuomo administration officials led a field trip to a train yard outside Schenectady, where four decommissioned Amtrak trains are rusting in the weeds. They were once part of a dream to bring high-speed rail transit between Albany and New York City that turned into a giant debacle. Director of State Operations Howard Glaser said the state paid $70 million for the trains and $150,000 a year to store them. He announced they’ll be sold for scrap.
Is the irony lost on anyone else that they are storing and paying for storage in the county that is the hardest hit by the idiots that are running it (and, for using that word, I apologize to all people actually qualified as idiots for putting these people in a class with them.)?
By the way, for those geniuses that were working on this before...
Schenectady County IS NOT BETWEEN Albany and New York City...

All I can say is OMG!!!!!
NY taxpayers should be screaming instead of just 'bending over'!!!

This story just proves why the Times Union should be the official paper of the municipalities in Schenectady County, and not the Daily Gazette. People being kept informed.
holy freakin' crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!! let the homeless live on them....
maybe some do gooder would like to volunteer to be the engineer...
HEY!!! DEEEEEEVVVVOOOOOOORRR!!!!!!! do you still have your engineers costume?
That is in the same trunk as his clown costume and his lingeree.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
The key FACT that the nayboobs leave out when making their attacks is that it was a REPUBLICAN - George Pataki who spent the $70 million dollars to purchase the old trains and authorized storing them there at taxpayer expense.
Oh - and for the idiot who didn't understand why they were stored in Glenville that is where Super Steel was located - the company that was supposed to restore the trains.
Thank God that Governor Andrew Cuomo is putting a stop to this ridiculousness.

according to your own leaning/supporting/touting, restoring the trains would be some kind of history story for you....regardless of dem/rep party involvement....I figured you would jump on that train and ride into historical oblivion all the while providing housing for the homeless and you get to wear your engineer's outfit.....
just a thought...it was all in support of you and your goals....maybe one of the cars could have a CVS
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
STOP BEING GOOD DEMOCRATS---STOP BEING GOOD REPUBLICANS--START BEING GOOD AMERICANS

What's everybody think. Should I sue for slander as he, himself, has stated several times that he will???
By the way, I said they had no reason to be there in the first place, because it wouldn't have been on their route (you know, between Albany and NYC).
