So did I until the age of 7, lived at 1820 Jerome Ave near Cheltingham Ave.

Stewarts (corner of Helderberg and Curry) used to be real gas station. Went ther to work on my car around 72...he had a Irish Wolfhound. Think when me moved out he moved to 5 corners for awhile.
yes it was, as recently as the early 80's. I had a black 69 Dodge coronet r/t and a guy that worked there had a blue '69 Dodge super Bee. The cars were almost identical, except the hoods.

The Cheryl you refer to was she Cheryl D. Yes you could also smell the fumes from the old varnish works too.
My dad grew up on 3rd Avenue in MT Pleasant. He said you could tell what direction the wind was blowing depending on whether you could smell the varnish.

had many calls to fire dept...for one thing or another....dangerous fumes.....daily......and for many years.....it was a God send when the varnish works
left the area for the Junction......Schdy Chemical....
I also think that people who lived near the varnish works developed lung problems later on in life.
I wouldn't be surprised, but I don't think it was universal. My grandparents lived there for 40 years and lived to 85 and 90 respectively...neither one developing any kind of lung issue.
