Get the state out of marriage licensing. Problem solved. But...I know...The statist have a hard time understanding how life could continue without government licensing everything.
Opposing licensing doesn't make a person a bigot.
Finally some sanity.
Back at Immaculate Conception, I was taught that marriage was one of the 7 blessed Sacraments. Exactly when did the government claim ownership and absolute definition powers?
What difference does marriage make to the government?
Aren't we all supposed to be treated as equals, married or not?
Then we have that little matter called the separation of church and state, as well.
Does the government own my Baptism, Communion and Confirmation as well as my marriage?
Will they own my Last Rites?
Please bury me face down...
How the hell do Conservatives fail to mention these points when addressing the entire topic?
Bottom line is each state has their own independent state constitution. They are allowed to make laws that apply to their state citizens. This is the way this country was intended to function.
EACH STATE IS INDEPENDENT FROM THE OTHER!!!
Same should apply to same sex marriage and abortion issues. Leave it up to the independent states!!!
I completely disagree.
Laws governing religion are unconstitutional.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ...
Heaven forbid we insult people's sensibilities...........................................or stray from "civilized debate"..........................................I've always felt a brick through a window accomplishes a whole lot more than a letter to the editor.....................but then that's just me
It's not the business of the government to make a relationship between two or more consenting adults legal OR illegal, whether interracial, homo, heterosexual, or even polygamy.
The neo-cons use the same coercive powers of government as liberals do to shape society into their view.
This is that Rick Santorum "conservatism".
Radical individualism. Sometimes Santorum comes up with good ideas that he bashes.
There is a generational gap on this issue. Older people tend to be against it, younger for it. That' s good news for the marriage equality crowd. When this generation moves on their bigotry and hatred will go with them. 100 years from now people will look back at this issue with shame that their recent ancestors were still thinking using hate based ideology over common sense.
This same breakdown applies to racism as well.
Each year thousands of racists die off and are replaced by tolerant people.
I don't care if a person has 12 wives or marries his sister. It really won't affect my life in any way, shape or form.
Those matters should not be left to the Fed or the states. They are strictly between the individual and his creator.
Democrats' and independents' support for legalized same-sex marriage increased this year by 13 and 10 points, respectively. Republicans' views on the issue did not change from last year. Clear majorities of both Democrats and independents now support gay marriage, 69% and 59% respectively, contrasted with 28% support among Republicans.
Support for legal gay marriage decreases markedly with age, ranging from 70% support among those aged 18 to 34, to 39% support among those 55 and older. More broadly, support is highest among younger women and lowest among older men. (Galllup)
Blahbity blah blah.
I could care less what the majority thinks about interfering in someone else's personal religious choices.
If you don't like gay couples, don't leave your home or watch TV.
You only get to run your own life.
Well except for my wife, who gets to run hers, mine, the kids and the grand kids.
31 States have now outlawed it. EVERYTIME it has been put up for a vote in ANY state it has been shot down. Even California has shot it down MULTIPLE times.
So no...Americans DO NOT support 'Gay Marriage'. They DO, however. support laws that offer rights to gay couples.
I could care less about gay marriage....the state shouldn't be in the business of licensing marriage......nor should they be in the business of forcing religion to follow the state.....
1. abortion legal 2. marriage legal
It seems we agree about the government overstepping it's authority.
But aside from that, the abortion and gay marriage issues are self determining issues that should concern no one.
Abortion: Forcing those who disagree with you to reproduce is counterproductive to your own beliefs. Allowing them the choice to not reproduce will tilt the majority to your own favor in the future.
Gay marriage: Gay marriages do not truly reproduce themselves. They adopt or reproduce an altered version of themselves by using a surrogate. By far, though, most gay couples don't have any children, ever. This would once again suggest the issue will auto correct in the near future, as they die off.
Bottom line: Stay out of it and things will work out as they are meant to be. Natural selection has been proven to be the best, most effective may for a species to survive. It doesn't mean that all species will survive.
people have CHOICE....get married in the church by their rules or get married in the state by their rules.....simple.....
if you are a catholic/muslim/jew/protestant or what ever and are gay then apparently you need to go to the 'state religion' and your needs/wants will be met.....
but the government has no right to force onto a religion it's requirement to marry how the state demands it....
would we force a bowling alley to have to include dart boards???
it's simple...stay away from the world systems and stay in the church if that is what one believes.....even the bible says this.....but somehow the church has tried to make heaven on earth according to man's interpretation of what god might want here.....the bible says IN the world just not OF it........
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
STOP BEING GOOD DEMOCRATS---STOP BEING GOOD REPUBLICANS--START BEING GOOD AMERICANS
Former Bush pollster Jan van Lohuizen warns Republicans in a new memo they are increasingly on the wrong side of the gay marriage issue:
"The increase in support is taking place among all partisan groups. While more Democrats support gay marriage than Republicans, support levels among Republicans are increasing over time. The same is true of age: younger people support same sex marriage more often than older people, but the trends show that all age groups are rethinking their position."
Andrew Sullivan: "Read the bluntness of this. This is the GOP establishment talking to itself. And the Republican pollster who arguably knows more about the politics of the gay issue than anyone else is advising them in no uncertain terms that they need to evolve and fast, if they're not going to damage their brand for an entire generation."
The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. John Kenneth Galbraith
It's not governing religion. The people, either by thier own religious doctrine or by thier own moral convictions, have voted to say that they do not want thier state to recognize 'gay marriage'. There is no 'right' to get married. much like there is no 'right' to be issued a drivers license.
