You heard it here first. Another defection to the 'police state."

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

No great loss here. And certainly no great surprise. He is a 'go along for the ride' kinda guy.

Longo had expressed interest in running on the Republican line for NYS Assembly against announced Democrat candidate Santabarbara.
Longo wasn't endorsed by his former party. So he defected to the same party as the guy who he wanted to oppose and retire to the
political sidelines.  Sour grapes?  Or, did Longo negotiate with the Democrat party for a future endorsement or patronage position?

Nearly all of those associated with the former Tommasone administration have switched parties.  I recall reports that Tommasone,
Parisi, Santabarbara, Signore and now Longo have all switched party affiliation.  Ideological epiphanies or self-serving betrayals of
(alleged) principles by opportunists and of the residents who supported them with our time, money, and votes?  Or, will this core of
new "Democrats" depose the former party leaders?

Who will be the next to change political affiliation?  Della Villa?  Mertz?

If so, what benefit/advantage did he negotiate for himself?  Longo was just reelected last November.  Doesn't need to be
concerned about campaigning again for another year or longer?  What could he have been offered to persuade him to
abandon the party?

With his decision, Longo betrayed the trust of many who were not just supporters, but who became friends over the years.

If I was a betting man, I'd have to bet there was an bribe incentive....that's how these things evolve in rotterdam.

Perhaps he received an increase in salary...perhaps?

And who is JL dating these days?

just askin'

My thoughts ...

There is usually a "carrot and a stick".  If there was a promised salary increase offered, the town budget SHOULD show it.  And, if, it could be tied directly to Longo's decision to switch parties, it would constitute both an abuse of power and a misappropriation of tax revenues.

I would expect that the Democrats promised Longo their party endorsement in his next reelection bid.  The results of the
last election indicate that Longo faced a formidable challenger.  Longo narrowly defeated Romano.  But, what is the stick?  Do the Democrat party bosses have some "inside baseball" that they threatened to make public?

Now to the Democrat party interest ... Why would they want Longo on their side of the great political divide?  Was it to
clear the decks for Santabarbara's run, to further erradicate the local Republican party, and/or some other motive?

Would be interested in seeing the facts exposed in a media report on this development.

retirement - remember the retirement package a few years back in 2010???

Disgruntled....sure I am disgruntled.  With the shi!t left over by Steve and the gang.  The reek of Craig Surprise, the reek of the Parisi appointment, the reek of the Eunice lynching, the reek of the sweet heart deals exteded to long pond and SI, the reek of the special retirement deals given to DeGeorgio and Denny, the reek of the zoning, planning, ethics and BAR appts put in place by Steve and the gang.  The reek of little debt service left, the reek of Jim Longo not having to be accoutable to his elected position, the reek of the Mertz-Parisi slugfest.

retirement - remember the retirement package a few years back in 2010 - under FDG???
and
county consolidation - "cost savings" - the county grabs 5 million for its consumption

in business, middle management(county government) is seen a waste - in government is good for the bottom line

Quoted from TippyCanoe
On the retirement incentive

the number mentioned was 5 but the published list is 4  who is the 5th???

here is the old roosters(think wine company logo) plan

Meers retires from the highway department.
the highway super. resigns his position.
Town Board hires the old super. for Meers' position for a for a short time.
the old highway super files for retirement under the plan

the old rooster then halves the highway supers' salary in the budget and
appoints one of his crew to the position.
all this is arranged by using the counsel to the state Assembly Democrats by none other than Darlene Mullally.

i here there is an email floating in the public domain in which the highway super. is urging the
council to accept the incentives.

the deputy highway super, the allegedly boyfriend to an ex town board member...
is supposedly rankled by this because he was hoping to get the highway super's spot himself when the
current highway super retired.

how much will this cost????

so who will the new highway super be???

and how does the current highway super.'s party feel about all of this??

is perfect storm is brewing for election day 2010???

and wait it gets better the comptroller is departing mid 2011.

so much for the 2020 b-day bash in rotterdam...

DVOR's 2 cents on the disolving of the rotterdam highway depatment - just like the town of princetown did a few months back

As the Highway Superintendent is an elected position .. the state law would not allow abolishing the
position until the end of the current term of office.  So even if the Highway Supt were to retire ..
someone would have to be appointed to fill the remainder of the term.
Then there is the matter of how many days before the election to the next term - the action to abolish an elected position has to happen a certain number of days  BEFORE the scheduled election .. and off
the top of my head I forget whether it is like 3 months or 6 months ... so the "window of opportunity" to
pass the local legislation to abolish the position would be like from now through early March 2011 but couldn't take effect until Jan 1 2012  --- and there may be one other hitch .. abolishing the Supt of
Highways may require BOTH a Town Board action AND a referendum vote by the voters of the town.

and this???
