ALBANY - A 175-pound black bear sauntered into the South End Tuesday night, climbed into a tree in a backyard and had to be tranquilized, police said. The ursine adventurer was spotted by a resident eating out of a bird feeder on the 200 block of Mount Hope Drive, said Officer Steve Smith. Cops trailed the bear as it moved across backyards, eventually setting up a perimeter around 156 Mount Hope Drive, where the bear had climbed into a tree, the police spokesman said. Environmental conservation officers arrived, shot the bear with a special tranquilizer and removed it from the tree, Smith said. The bear is currently at the Environmental Conservation building in Schenectady, where it will be evaluate and released into the wild Wednesday afternoon.
